Try turning the steering column really hard one way or the other while you are turning the key

The ignition cylinder is either worn out or you may have a key that has excessive wear. Try using another key or you may be able to take your vin number and proof of ownership to a dealer and make a new key. Chrysler is known for faulty ignition switches though and if the new key does not work you will have to replace the ignition lock cylinder.

had the same problem with a 99 dodge van. tow truck driver put the key into the ignition and tapped it a couple of times while turning the key to freed it up and start the engine. works as long as you leave the key in the ignition so i use a second key to lock/unlock the van. hope this works for you. gary

if you tap on the lock cylinder with a small hammer it may jar it enough to get it to turn.....to replace the tumblers you will need to remove the lock cylinder and then disassemble it. each tumbler has a certain number on it and will need replaced with that same number. it is easier to have it dealer or locksmith do it.
