Just bought a 1999 Mercedes E430 and the left low beam headlight is out. Changed bulbs and it will come on for 3-5 seconds then go out again. Tried 3 bulbs and got the same result.

Check the wiring on that light. Also check the bulb with a couple of wires to the battery, or swap the bulb left to right to make sure the new bulb is okay.
Did it blow the New Bulbs? If so, sounds like You have a short! You need to trace your wires going from headlight to fuse box to see if there is a bare wire! or loose connection!
Bulb may be no good as in headlight bulbs one filament can go leaving only either low beam or high beam operational on one headlight so change the bulb first on that side other than that could be power related
Did you actually check the bulb? It may have burned out or the wiring to it may have lost connection. Some of these vehicles actually have a separate fuse for the left and the right headlights.
you don't need a diagram. each bulb is high and low beam all in one. if you have either high or low beam out replace the bulb and it will be working again. again there is only one bulb per headlight.
