Check for leaks is first. Then look at the serpentine belt, is it soaked with oil. Does the belt squeal at start up? check the tensioner. I replace both. Does the pump whine? gets louder when turning? replace the pump. The rack and pinion is the last on the list. Look at the boots and rack. Are they leaking badly?

The first thing you need to do is find the leak, then once that is repaired if the problem persists you need to have the pump pressure tested and if that is ok replace the rack and pinion steering gear.

Power steering makes noise that changes with the speed of the car. The power steering goes out during any rain event. 150,000 miles, original engine.

If the P/S pump is not low of fluid and you have not just recently added P/S fluid then the pump needs replacing. If you recently added fluid to the pump and it was low it may have air in the system. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel fully to the right and fully to the left 10 times. This will remove any trapped air.

Suggest you check the power steering fluid level. May be running low. Prolonged operation at low level can damage the unit.

What type of power steering fluid does a 2005 Saturn Relay2 use?

It should say on the cap, and it will be in the owners manual. If you don't have one you get get a free electronic copy from GM here
It is probably the same as your transmission fluid - but I have never owned a Saturn.

Is there a major leak somewhere? It will make noise if low or when the oil is aerated. Look for the leak.

2005 ion power steering problem

remove electronic power steering (EPS) motor. remove the 4 bolts that hold on the motor housing. remove the housing. using a tooth brush, clean out the 'brush' dust from between the commutators. don't use cleaner spray as you might degrease the bearings. don't use anything metal to clean out the dust you might scratch or nick the commutators.

this solution has worked for over 500 miles for me. I'll keep you posted.

Steering warning light on 2005 suzuki reno

Speed Sensitive Power Steering
(SSPS) Warning Light
If your vehicle has Speed Sensitive Power
Steering (SSPS), this warning light will
come on briefly when you turn the ignition
to ON as a check to show you the bulb is
working.
Then it should go out after a few seconds.
If the warning light does not come on, have
it fixed so it will be able to warn you if there
is a problem.
If the warning light stays on, or comes on
while you are driving, the SSPS system
may not be working. If this happens, see
your SUZUKI dealer for service.

Power steering, works 1 way but not other

You will have to replace the pump. try removing the pump and see if it turns with the engine off and the key unlocked . Even though it is hard . If it turns replace the pump.
