After 14 years I think it would be reasonable to have bad catalytic converter. Is there some reason your not accepting this?

sounds like it to me ,but without seeing it mysefl it difficult to say yes or no

there are 4 o2 sensors. one on each bank after the cat. converters, one before the muffler and one on the muffler.

chances are it one of the o2 sensors by the cat converters.

check you Mass Air Sensor and replace spark plugs, because there is probably something simple that wrecked your o2 sensor in the first place and it will help your vehicle run and last longer. It could be more complicated, like a vacuum leak cuz honda civics are known to have head gaskets replaced.

But i guess first you need to figure out which o2 sensor it is.

A "cat back" replacement, (everything behind the catalytic converter), should be 1 to 3 hours labor and $300 to $600 for parts. If you need a catalytic converter add at least $300 to $400 for the part, ($299 to start at www.napaonline.com).

Labor rates very from area to area so call around to get an idea of the going rate where you are, (in my area I would expect about $150 total labor worst case).

if the bolts are rusted
u need a torch to burn them out
remove the bolt from the front of the cat and the rear othecat
somemodels have o2sensor on them, u have to be able to remove it before u take outthe cat or u will have ahard time
if it's universal u need to cutout the old cat
if u can't handle all of this take it to a muffler shop

it means your 02 sensor pre cat is not working or the cat is no longer any good start with the 02 sen its easy to do and cheaper than the cat

start with the easy stuff. check the plugs. make sure they are not wet with oil leaking from the spark plug stem seals located on the rocker cover. Check your air filter to make sure its clean. Now for the slightly harder stuff. The spark plug wires should be changed every 80k or so. My suspect the reason for the power loss is most likely a clogged cat convert in the exhaust system. check your exhaust flow. Way to do that is to check the temp. of the exhaust before the cat and the temp. after the cat. If the Cat is plugged the temp before the catalytic converter will be abnormally higher than after the cat.

BUT if you are experiencing misfire of engine. I would go straight to replacing spark plugs and wires. Distributor cap and rotor.

Also check the charging system. make sure the alternator is charging the battery at above 13Volts. With all components on. ( radio/lights/highbeam/AC). Use a voltmeter and check at the battery positive and negative. if its not charging above 13 V replace the alternator.

it sounds like it could be the cat sensor on your exhaust!! the connection could of come loose or you might need a new cat box!

your cat converter could b bad
