Mazda mx6 1997 model v6 auto,the car starts ok and idle smooth but it's got no refs. when on drive it's cuts on 2000 refs. What can cause this problem?

Before any diagnostics, I would run a tank of gas with a bottle of fuel dryer and injector cleaner to ensure that the engine racing isn't resulting from moisture and clogged injectors.

First, do a tune-up. Make sure your air filter is clean and the idle air passages in the carburetor are clear. I assume at one the idle mixture was properly set, so if it's no longer idling properly, something else has changed. Fouled plugs or bad fuel could be a cause. In particular, ethanol-blend fuel that has been in the tank for several months will not work well in engines without electronic controls.

You need to plug it in to an engine diagnostic computer, it is probably a sensor that needs to be replaced. (Coolant temperature sensor is a probable cause) but you should plug in to engine diagnostic computer.

It can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related issues,---------------

Most of the time when the cars idle fluctates up and down ia the IAC (idle air control) they either build up carbon and are slow to move of it is defective.

check idle speed sensor on your intake manifold around 700 to 750 rpm is normal ,air temp may efect idle speed .

i advice you to change the spark plugs,this is cause because at cold start the engine needs a rich mixture in order to maintain a smooth idle,before driving the car,when starting from cold ,what you have to do is to accelerate up to 2000 rpm for 3 minutes then you drive it,then it should be ok

Sounds like your "speed sensor" is failing. When it fails it will cause irregular shift patterns and engine idle speeds.

Check breather pipes, common thing on the jags, dragging oil residue and bad air into throttle, look for oil residue on engine.Good luck Davelee
