It is a 4x4. The "yellow" looking item in between/inside the black spring coil seems to be out of its joint. When I compare the left vs the right, the left side is sitting up high, while the right side appears to be settled into place.

You will need a spring compressor which can be a loaner tool from most auto parts store but thats the only special tool needed . And yes it's quite easy

You have to remove them - that "block" is the upper strut-to-body mounting section and serves as the upper seat for the spring as well as the anchor for the top of the strut. You need to take those four 17mm bolts out, as well as the rear upper sway bar bolt, the upper control arm bolt (at the top of the hub), and the bottom bolt on the strut, where it goes through the lower control arm. You'll then have to compress the spring enough to take the bolt out of the "block" (it goes through sideways, and I believe is 19mm on the bolt head as well as the nut). At this point, you can slide the spring/strut out of the block, decompress the spring, pull out the strut, and install a new spring over the strut. Recompress enough to get the top of the strut visible through the anchor bolt hole in the block, rebolt it, decompress the spring, and reinstall the assembly in the car. Usually when you go to reinstall it, the bottom of the strut is not angled quite right once the top four 17mm bolts are back in and the block is secured to the body. I put a large screwdriver through the lower strut bolt hole at the bottom of the strut and use that to turn it, or I grab the weld near the bottom of the strut with large ChanneLock pliers and turn it until it's aligned with the control arm properly. Once it is, put the lower bolt back in, rebolt the control arm and sway bar, and you're good to go.
Note - this job will not affect alignment specs - you don't remove any bolts used in aligning the car, so that's not a concern when doing this repair.

first you can loosen the top strut nuts, they are accesses from the boot and the bolt tops may have an allen key top you can use to stop the piston spinning, then you will need to jack up back of car, one side at a time, unbolt bottom of existing shocks, place new ones inplace but bolt tops in first, if they dont fit as too long to get into the bottom bolt holes, try jacking the car as high as possible and get a friend to slowly but firmly push down on the rear wheel, (btw you do this with the wheels on, just as easy as off) and with that extra clearance you should get em in.. or there are spring compressors but I doubt they will be needed, or even possible on "in car mounted" springs.. goodluck, there are also several articles on vwwatercooled.org.au, checkit!! :) Chas

Aren't they airbag suspension on the 1995? I know for a fact that the 96 is. And I have had to replace the airbags on both sides of my 96. These airbags have been a major issue on the Lincolns. The way you can tell is look up in the fender well and see if you see a coil spring, then it is not an airbag suspension. You may know exactly what you are talking about and could have coil springs. But I was almost certain that the 94's is when they started putting the airbags in. If this is the case then, I would highly suggest taking it in to have the air bag replaced. The airbag is on top of the strut and they are expensive to replace. Then after you replace them, then you have to re align the front end. It is a pretty major job.
