Your Tacoma with have a diagnostic system called OBDII.
There will be a port for the OBDII code reader to connect to, under your dash. (Locted by handbrake.)
The ODBII code reader will read the stored information relating to your engine light. It is also used to clear the dash light after the related component that is setting the fault code is repair/replaced.
Some auto parts stores have a customer service OBDII tool and will read your codes for you, free of charge.
Check engine lights also refer to transmission problems , over heating
best answer is to have the fault codes read to determine if a sensor failure or a real expensive problem
