No ignition spark when hot. resistance values on 4 ignition coils are good. computer has been replaced. fuel pressure is in specs. fuel lines are on opposite side of exhaust. no sign of over heating.

Action
Definition: Engine cranks OK, but does not start for a long time. Does eventually run, or may start but immediately dies.
Preliminary
• Refer to the Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check .
• Refer to Important Preliminary Checks .
• Refer to Visual/Physical Checks .
• Search for bulletins.
Sensor/System
• Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor for being shifted in value. Connect a Scan Tool and compare the Engine Coolant Temperature with the Intake Air Temperature on a cold engine. The ECT and IAT should be within ± 3°C (5°F) of each other. Check the resistance of the ECT sensor if the temperature is out of range with the IAT sensor. Refer to Temperature vs Resistance . If the ECT sensor resistance is not within the specification, refer to DTC P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage or DTC P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit High Voltage .
• Check the throttle body inlet screen for foreign objects or damage that may affect the MAF sensor airflow sample. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
• Use a scan tool in order to check the IAC operation. Refer to Idle Air Control (IAC) System Check .
• EGR system. Check the for the following conditions:
- EGR pipes and adapter for vacuum leaks.
- Remove the EGR valve and check for a stuck open pintle. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .
Fuel System
• Check the fuel pump relay circuit for proper operation. Refer to Fuel Pump Electrical Circuit Diagnosis .
• Check for incorrect fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel System Pressure Test .
• Check the fuel injectors. Refer to Fuel Injector Solenoid Coil Test .
• Check for fuel contamination. Refer to Alcohol/Contaminants-in-Fuel Test .
Ignition System
• Check for proper ignition voltage output by using the following steps:
- Clip the spark tester J 26792 to engine ground.
- Connect one end of a spark plug wire to the spark tester while leaving the other end of the spark plug wire to the coil being tested.
- Connect one end of another spark plug wire to the other coil tower.
- Connect the other end of the spark plug wire to ground.
- Crank the engine while observing the spark tester. A crisp blue spark should be observed.
- Repeat the above steps for each coil.
• If an adequate spark is not present at the coil(s), check for the following conditions:
- Coil(s) - Cracks, carbon tracking/arcing, or a resistance value outside the specified range.
Coil Resistance
5000 - 8000 ohms (5K - 8K ohms)
- Spark Plug wires
• signs of arcing/cross
• cracks
• carbon tracking
• firing
• plug boot damage
• pinched or improper routing
• high resistance
- Spark plug wire resistances should measure less than the specified value.
VIN 1 Spark Plug Wire Resistance
7000 ohms (7K ohms).
VIN K Spark Plug Wires Resistance
10000 ohms (10K ohms).
Important: Spraying the secondary ignition wires with a light mist of water may help locate an intermittent problem. Ignition components will arc to ground when a secondary component is malfunctioning.
- Defective module.
- Ignition System Wiring - Loose ignition module feed or ground connection, or damaged system wiring.
• Remove spark plugs and check for the following conditions:
- Fouled plugs
- Cracks
- Wear
- Improper gap
- Burned or damaged electrodes
- Improper heat range or reach
• If spark plugs are gas or oil fouled, the cause of the fouling must be determined before replacing the spark plugs.
Engine Mechanical
• Excessive oil in combustion chamber-Leaking valve seals. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
• Low cylinder compression. Refer to Engine Mechanical.
• For incorrect basic engine parts. Inspect the following:
- Cylinder heads
- Camshaft and valve train components
- Pistons, etc.
- Refer to Engine Mechanical.

The Distributor Ignition (DI) system is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

The Distributorless Ignition System (DIS) is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Testing The Ignition Coil

  1. Remove the ignition coil(s).
  2. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil. The resistance should be 0.50-0.90 ohms.
  3. Check the resistance between the secondary terminals. It should be 5000-10,000 ohms.
  4. If the coil failed either test, replace the coil.
If the coils(s) are good check the ignitions leads by measuring their resistance. (Multi Meter required.) If the coil(s) and leads are good

Hard starting


This problem can be hard to track down , it could be caused by several thing's ! A bad check valve in the fuel pump letting fuel drain back into the tank , not keeping fuel line pressure up , a crankshaft position sensor can also cause this as well as an ignition control module !

Sensor/System

Test the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor for being shifted in value. Connect a scan tool. Compare the engine coolant temperature against the intake air temperature (IAT) on a cold engine. The ECT and IAT sensor values should be within ?± 3?°C (5?°F) of each other. If the ECT sensor is out of range with the IAT sensor, check the resistance of the ECT sensor. Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance for resistance specifications. Replace the ECT sensor if the resistance is not within the specification. If the sensor is within the specification, repair the ECT signal circuit for high resistance.

Inspect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor installation. A MAF sensor that is incorrectly installed may cause a hard start. Important: The embossed arrows on the MAF sensor indicate the direction of the intake air flow. The arrows must point toward the engine. Install the MAF in the proper direction. Refer to Mass Airflow Sensor/Intake Air Temperature Sensor Replacement .

Inspect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor for proper mounting and/or a bad connection. A long crank time occurs if the PCM does not receive a CMP signal.

Fuel System

Inspect the fuel pump relay operation. The fuel pump should turn ON for 2 seconds when you turn ON the ignition. Refer to Fuel Pump Electrical Circuit Diagnosis .

A faulty in-tank fuel pump check valve allows the fuel in the lines to drain back to the tank after the engine stops. Refer to Fuel System Diagnosis .

Inspect both injector fuses for being open. An open injector fuse causes four injectors and four ignition coils not to operate. Replace the fuse. Inspect the injector circuits and the ignition coil circuits for an intermittent short to ground.

Why does my 87 reliant stall when it gets hot


Not if you have spark. You may have increased resistance in the fuel injector circuit. I have read that liberal use of electrical contact (tv tuner) cleaner on the injector circuit connectors may cure this. You should measure the resistance through the injector terminals. Cold, it should be between .9 and 1.2 ohms. If all tests OK, you may have a bad injector driver in the computer.

I've been there.... A nightmare!!!

Your prolem sounds as the classical Hot Coil problem with no solution. Next time when engine stalls, check for spark, touch the coil and the ignition module. If they feel hot to the touch (can't hold it), chances are there is too much resistance in the High Tension side of the ignintion circuit.
This means the circuit from the coil to the spark plugs has too much resistance. Since you already changed everything I have to ask a question: Is everything as original specs??

When I had this problem it resulted that the gap between the terminals of the distributor cap (new) and rotor where to big, This created great resistance which heated the coil and quit sending spark.

Perhaps there is something in the High Tension circuit which is out of original specs. Is the gap in spark plugs correct?
Try an old distibutor cap. Do the metal contacts in the spark plug cables touch the metal of the spark plug contact?
Does the metal contact from the cable touch the metal from the coil's contact? Are they dry?

Check things which can create a gap where electriciy has to "jump" to complete its way to the spark plug. These are the ones which cause the hot coil and hot module trouble.

Tested power to coil - result-power to coil, checked timing belt - result O.K., checked fuel pressure - result - got that. Out of ideas. No spark to plugs, car turns over but will not ignite.


I would be looking at the ignition module in the distributor. Also check the coil pack primary and secondary resistance to see if the coil itself is good. I don't know what your resistance values should be. I work on all makes and models. I look them up as I go. If you have a book it will tell you. An autoparts store can tell you also.

I just changed the fuel pump, crank senser, dist. cap, plugs and wires , coil,and button and it still wont start


This is a pretty broad question. Sometimes throwing parts at a problem works, sometimes not.

Engines need 4 things to run: fuel, air, compression, and ignition.
Fuel: Need to test that line pressure is within spec, injectors are working (resistance is usually 12-14 ohms)
Air: Check for proper vacuum, air filter, air path
Compression: usually does not need checked, but if there is oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil, or oil in the intake or exhaust I would check this
Ignition: simple spark test

Are you getting spark from coil wire when cranking? If so, check the cap & rotor. If not, the most common failure is the crank sensor. If you have a 4,0, you can find it on the drivers side of the bellhousing, in line with the flywheel, just where it's annoying to work on. There is a test you can make, but I don't have the specific test values or the correct terminals to check. (you can find that info in any half decent manual.
