It's probably a coil breaking down , have a scan tool hooked up an have misfires checked to see which cylinder is missing .
Ignition Coils
Each ignition coil has an ignition 1 voltage feed and a ground. The engine control module (ECM) supplies a low reference and an ignition control (IC) circuit. Each ignition coil contains a solid state driver module. The ECM will command the IC circuit ON, this allows the current to flow through the primary coil windings for the appropriate time or dwell. When the ECM commands the IC circuit OFF, this will interrupt current flow through the primary coil windings. The magnetic field created by the primary coil windings will collapse across the secondary coil windings, which induces a high voltage across the spark plug electrodes. The coils are current limited to prevent overloading if the IC current is held high too long. The spark plugs are connected to their respective coils by a short secondary wire. The spark plugs are tipped with iridium for long life and efficiency.
Drive it long enough like that (with it misfiring ) the check engine light will flash . This is to warn that a catalytic converter damaging event is taking place . This would also set a DTC - diagnostic trouble code

SOURCE: hard starting.. check engine on P0101

The filter is after the sensor. If the filter is dirty, it should be replaced anyways. If the sensor is covered in dirt, than yes clean it first.
Lastly replace MAF

SOURCE: p0102 Grand Prix

P0102 is ---- mass or volume air flow circuit, low input.
Check the wires going to the maf sensor and at the connection. If all seems ok, you might need a new sensor, seeing how it ran a little better when disconnected.

SOURCE: can I clean my Maf sensor and throttle body myself

Yes it will help car run better. Take off any hose that goes to card so that you can see down throttle bore. Start car. Grab throttle linkage and figure out how to move it so that you can make the engine go faster. Begine to spray inside throttle body using little red hose that came with carb cleaner. While you are spraying the engine will try to cut out move the throttle linkage to speed up the engine so it won't cut out. Keep spraying all around inside and outside throttle bore.

SOURCE: trying to change my water

I normally don't pass the buck, but go to e-how.com and depending on whether your

car is supercharged or not they tell you step by step how to remove your belts ,and

where the tensioner is located. there isn't enough space on this page to give you directions.

good luck!

My 2006 grand prix gxp 5.3 rpms jump around while holding speed. I replaced all the plugs and wires, 3 coil packs, Maf sensor, cleaned k&n air filter. Shows nothing on scope. No check engine light.

In researching your issue, I remembered my 2002 Honda Accord did the very same thing and finally went all the way to the pin it would normally sit on when the engine is off. Ultimately, it was a wire cluster that had started shorting out and eventually burned out completely. I see you were very thorough with what all was replaced but the problem most likely lies behind the dash panel itself. Only other thing could be your Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) has some problems with the wire chassis. That is the only part I didn't see listed along with all you HAVE replaced.

Incidentally, I found a website you might find interesting and could explain other aspects I didn't list above from personal experience.

Hope this helps Pontiac Grand Prix Car Questions Repair Forum Answers

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix gxp overheats after only driving 10 to 15 miles the ac off for engine protection comes on then coolant hot mil comes on. What is the best suggestion for this fix?

First check to see if fan motors are working. If they are then sounds like new thermostat And after you put in new thermostat don't forget to bleed the air out of system with engine running. Bleed screws should be on manifold on front of engine. If you don't bleed the air out then it will overheat. I had same problem but the only thing I forgot to do after changing coolant and thermostat was bleeding the air. Good luck

Hi, you can try cleaning the MAF sensor, but you probably need a new one. Fortunately you can get one for only $70 at autozone. This is cheap compared to other MAF sensors I've seen.
First check the connection on the sensor. If good, remove the sensor and spray thru the mesh with electric parts cleaner. Reinstall and see if it's any better. If not, replace the sensor.
Not sure if the MAP sensor is bad or not. Can you tell us the exact codes you got, as there are several different ones for each sensor?
