This is the anti theft function working as it should. Your husband needed to override it with the key. The command told the car to lock down. Because the key was not in the car the anti theft set off the alarm and locked down the engine as well. This is exactly what you would want the car to do if you left it locked on the street with your windows down while shopping. Otherwise someone could reach in the window, unlock the door, slide in and start hot wiring the car. These lock functions are programmable and can be changed at the dealership.
