To program the length of delay for the headlights of a 2004 Outlander, turn the headlight switch off and make sure it is in the Auto position. Then wait for the desired amount of time you want the headlights to stay on before turning the switch back to OFF. The maximum delay you can set is three minutes. For more information, please refer to your car's manual or contact a certified mechanic.

This is the delay feature of your vehicle.
Your car's Auto Headlight functionality offers both convenience and safety. The exit delay programmed in means that the lights will stay on after you turn off the engine for a set period of time. You can change how long they stay on to fit your needs. Here's how to do that:
Make sure the headlight switch is in the Auto position.
Make sure the key is set to OFF.
Turn the headlight switch off.
Turn the switch back to ON, then OFF again.
Turn the switch back to the Auto position.
Make sure the lights come on.
Wait for the amount of time you want the headlights to stay on, then turn the switch back to OFF once more.
The headlight delay should now be programmed.
Tips
The maximum delay you can set is three minutes.
You can set the system to have no delay by not waiting to turn the switch back to OFF the final time.
If you turn your car off before you turn your car off that activates the sentine feature on your headlights and if your taurus has that feature. There should be a delay adjustment somewhere around the headlight switch. That is a nice feature to have when you come home to a dark house. The headlights remain on lighting your way in. Then, turns off after 30 sec. or so. If not so in your case then, let. me know
If your delay module is working correctly, you should be able to turn your headlights off first, then shut the engine off and by then, all lights will go off. never need to use my delay unit always shut headlights off then the engine.
Look for other light controls, this sounds like sentinal lighting, which has what looks like a dimmer style control that sets this light off delay. the goal is to give light until you get in the house. the delay is adjustable.
sounds like there is no problem , on the newer cars , there is a time delay on the dome lights so you have time to get the key in the switch so you can see what you are doing ,some makes have a adjustment for the delay next to the headlight switch
