This truck sat all winter without a motor but it did run fine previously just had lifters pumping down.
Keep in mind that this truck sat over the winter with no motor in it. I recently replaced my old motor with a low mileage replacement. Due to parts worn on old motor I' ve replaced the cam with a High Energy Comp Cam and new roller rockers. I had to replace the distributor because of the worn gear and there wasn' t any gears in town. It started right away but then wanted to die after a few seconds. I can keep it running by pumping the throttle like in a old carb car. So I checked the fuel pressure and it was idling about 45 then crept up to 50 to 53 lbs. Anyway I replaced the fuel pressure regulator - no difference in it' s running. I then replace the fuel filter - no difference. I then thought it had to be the fuel pump if everything in between the tank and injectors had been replaced - no difference. The last thing in the system were the injectors so I put in some of my spare injectors - no difference at all. Right now I' m thinking in tight circles and just need a different and fresh point of view. By the way all tune-up parts have been changed also plugs and wires - all correct parts. I haven't been able to set the timing because of this issue nor get the cam broken in correctly.

Okay guy so lifters have springs inside and they keep tension on the push rods on older engine and oil has a lot to do with it if your lifters are really bad and making weird noises if you really need to quiet you need to put a much thicker motor oil in the car that will help to quiet the lifters for now and hopefully make them work a little better for now otherwise otherwise and remove the heads and replace the lifters they are cheap
but keep in mind if your hearing a real strong knocking the push are most likely the problem and are bent does the exhaust blow smoke or does the vehicle run funny?
If it sat for 3 yrs without starting then chances are it is the fuel. I belive most of the older toyotas had a drain on the gas tank, I would reccomend draining the gas and replacing the fuel filter to start with, just keep in mind that if it has an electric fuel pump there is a good possibility that it has gone bad from sitting. P.S. if there is no drain and you can't get the fuel pump to work and pump out all the old gas then I would suggest getting a universal fuel pump to remove all the old gas, or you can try to syphon the gas out and is a pain. Hope this helps you out, if you have any more questions then add a comment and I will get back to you.
Also- the rattle is most likely the valve lifters. The lifters on this engine and the model previous (I have owned both to 180k miles or more) lose pressure when the motor is off. They re-pressureize with engine oil after the motor starts and tap a little until they "pump up" to full size. Just don't drive until the rattle dies down and as long as it is under 30 seconds or so- you will be fine there.
its normal to hear the ticking noise on innitial startup in the winter, its the lifters pumping up, and when the motor gets warmed up everything expands and quiets down.. nothing serious
High milage? Try engine cleaner, run for couple hundred miles and then use an additive like Restore. If it's just dirt this may help. Make sure you are using the correct viscosity oil for winter temps. If it's from wear only parts replacement will fix it.
solid lifters? i could be wrong but i think they are hydraulic lifters. ive had quite a few of them not pump up when re-installing the valvetrain and cause a tick. pull off the valvetrain and check to see if all the lifters/tappets are firm with no squish. that might be your problem
You should be fine. the same oil port feeds both sides of the lifter galley, it just splits and goes to both sides. fire it without the valvecovers on it or at least that side. you will have oil shortly. many different reasons for this. try to turn the engine 180 degrees if it really bothers you. its good to be thorough like you are but you'll be fine.
