check for power steering belt, oil in the reservoir. If electric pump check fuse . Take it to an accredited steering specialist shop and have it checked.
hi Jo,the power steering is powered by the fanbelt and if its slipping will cause it to go heavy but a light would come up on the dash to tell you the alternator was not charging.so if not the belt,it could be the electrics for the pwr steering need looking into, this is easier to get on the dealers diagnostic computer which will show up the exact fault.and would save any guesswork.
THE BRAKE LIGHTS DO GO THROUGH THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. TO TEST, REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER AROUND THE THE COLUMN, UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL. THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH MUST BE IN THE OFF POSITION. YOU WILL NEED TO EXPOSE THE WIRES UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL. DO NOT DISTURB THE WIRES IN THE YELLOW JACKET. THEY ARE AIRBAG WIRES. YELLOW PLUGS YELLOW JACKETED WIRES ARE AIRBAG.THE WIRE IN QUESTION HERE IS YELLOW BUT IT IS NOT IN A YELLOW JACKET, [ SLEEVE ]. NOW, PUSH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE YELLOW WIRE IS LEFT REAR TURN & BRAKE WIRE, DARK GREEN IS RIGHT REAR TURN & BRAKE WIRE. BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, IF BOTH OF THOSE WIRES HAVE POWER, ALL OF THAT IS OK. IF THE YELLOW WIRE HAS NO POWER TURN SIGNAL SWITCH IS BAD
Found a blown 5A fuse in the fusebox under the right side of the steering wheel (near driver-side door). Replaced this, and all symptoms appear to have gone... question is, what caused the fuse to blow in the first place?
it definitely the pump. you can get a new one from any Toyota dealer or you can buy one at a auto parts store (Checker, Autozone, etc.). you may have to pull the pulley off the old pump and reuse it, if so then i would take it to a shop. if the new pump comes with a pulley installed on the pump then it should be pretty easy, probably take a couple hours.
