SOURCE: after changing the power steering

The pressure is controlled by the pressure control valve at the back of the pump. This valve comes with the pump. You probably have a bad power steering pump.

SOURCE: Had a power steering leak, changed pump still had

Hello,

Power steering systems are actually pretty basic as far as operation, however pain in the **** when it comes to leaks. As read, you said you had leak in what you thought was in your power steering pump, and then found out it was the hi pressure hose that was leaking, Unless your car has some type of fuse that controls it in your fuse panel. (check owners manual, to see if you have a relay type of fuse that controls the electrical circuit that triggers the pump) if so, it could of got blown. However, I believe this is what has happened. When you had a leak in the power steering, you thought it was the pump, so you replaced the pump, which of course pump was probably bad because of lack of fluid circulation with a leak, it instantly will dry out, from high heat of friction from barrings, metal on metal with no fluid. Now, that being said, you put new pump on, but sense the leak was actually off the high pressure hose, means it is highly possible that your new pump, by driving it for even 10 minutes, with the leak of high pressure hose, could of cause new pump to burnout. So, at worse case example, you have burnt up new pump, because of the time you replace the high pressure hose might of already done the damage to the new pump. But, before you go that route of replacing again, the new pump, check all your wire connections that are triggering the pump. Make sure all connections are hooked up good, and making good contact, as even the pump has to have power supply to trigger it, and check to see if inline fuse (if has one) is good and of course as said earlier fuse box to see if as a safety feature, sense would be low on fluid with a leak if it blew the fuse that controls the electronics that go to the pump , make sure it is good. I hope this helps you in the areas to look. Places like AUTO ZONE, can look up your car and let you know for sure if your pump is controlled by a separate fuse and where it would be. Thanks Mike from Fixya

My van is having a hard time turning, would this be the power steering pump going out and if so how can I fix my 1998 Mercury villager

It could be or the steering rack . The power steering system uses a CII type power steering pump (3A674) and a power rack and pinion steering gear.

If you never replaced either of these parts before suggest you take to a ASE certified repair shop .
Pump Flow and Pressure Tests Before performing pump flow and pressure test, complete the following checks for conditions which could cause loss of power assist. Take corrective action if necessary.
  1. Check power steering oil reservoir (3A697) for proper fluid level.
  1. Check tires for correct air pressure.
  1. Check drive belt (8620) for proper tension.
  1. Check power steering pump (3A674) for correct model and vehicle application.
  1. Check for correct size power steering pump pulleys (3A733) on power steering pump and engine.
  1. Check entire system for damage. Replace parts, if necessary.
If the above items are correct, or have been corrected, and the loss of assist still exists, test power steering pump flow and pressure to determine whether the trouble is in the power steering pump , power rack and pinion steering gear or hoses.

Power steering hose keeps breaking, even when replaced by high pressure hoses. Replacing rack and pinion does not help either.

A bad seal in the rack and pinion would have caused low pressure from fluid by-passing the seal. This also would have caused noticeably increased effort to steer the vehicle. Excessively high pressure would indicate an issue between the power steering pump and the rack, and since the hoses have been replaced I would focus on the pump. PS, find a real mechanic, not a parts changer.

Power steering fluid leak in 99 Toyota Corolla

look for split in the hard line where fluid is leaking. If you see split, change the line only. make sure power steering reservoir is filled and rack and pinion is full (charge with steering wheel left/right motion). You should be able to remove wheel and inside wheel panel to see power steering fluid shooting out of any hole. There is hydraulic pressure on the lines.
