Toyota diesel valve are hot .020 mm(.008") inlet and .036 mm (.014") exhaust
for a cold setting add .002" to the dimensions and recheck when hot

Cold: Intake 0.30mm, Exhaust 0.50mm.
Hot: Intake 0.20mm, Exhaust 0.040mm.

The 2L Toyota engine runs an overhead cam with bucket lifters, and requires removing and replacing of shims to adjust clearances...

  • Power which holds the gears longer before change up....
  • Economy....gears change normally....
  • Snow....traction control...This last mode uses the ABS
  • A anti lock B brake S system
  • The ABS system automatically monitors the rotational speed of each wheel, and when brakes are applied, releases any brake about to lock up, independent of the others.
  • This is done because when wheels lock and skid, traction and control is lost....
  • Traction control brakes any wheel which begins to lose traction under power, spinning too fast and thereby also loosing traction if it was not controlled...

With the valve you are adjusting closed, .011 (11 thousandths) between rocker arm and valve stem....Its better to be a little loose than too tight...you want the lash to have a noticeable click in the rocker arm, do one cylinder at a time with both I and E closed (Heel of the Cam Lobe).....

Weak cylinder compression. (Check valve clearance)
Clean the throttle body and re-learn idle speed control system.
The abnormal engine noise is often called piston slap and it is heard at cold start when the ambient temperature is near to zero. This is absolutely harmless.

What is the difference between hot and cold vavle clearances
When it is stated that valve clearance should be set when hot, you first adjust the clearance on the cold engine after assembly to the hot setting specs if they are the only ones given, then let the vehicle warm up to operating temperature. Then adjust the clearances again.
If it is just a tune-up(undisturbed engine), let the engine warm up to operating temperature, then adjust.
The reason is that metal expands as it heats up, which affects the valve clearance.
