The answer for this is simple the fuel guage sending unit is defective, it is in the fuel tank, nothing else will cause this type of symtom.
SOURCE: the fuel tank gauge is not working correctly
It would appear your sending unit is failing, this is located within the gas tank. On this car I believe you can access the fuel tank by the trunk. Remove the liner and look for a hatch cover (usually held in place by 4-6 screws) once this is removed you should be looking at the top of the gas tank.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

you need to check the alternator, it does sound like the voltage regulator is causing the problem, check the alternator out put if it is pushing out over 15 volts you need to get it sorted asp,

this problem is caused by a defective gas tank sending unit for the gage and the low fuel light, replace the sending unit.

It is a fuel gauge sensor also known as the level sensor, There is a level sensor that has a boot spring attached to it that is probraly jammed, or just simply damaged. This will need to be replaced, you can located this at your fuel pump, which in normal case is underneath you rear seat in which side is your fuel door is located. Once you located the opening of the fuel pump passage then there is normally 6-8 small bolt that is screwed to hold your fuel pump to the fuel tank and some cable harness. Theses will need to be taken off in order for you to take your fuel pump. In my best advice, you minus well replace your whole fuel pump system to save time and complication when installing
