The sensor could be reading wrong. Unplugged it goes to default. The last known firing for the PCM. I would OHM out the old cam sensor and new one before installing the new one. If they are close, Don't install the new one. It sounds to me like you have an electrical issue. Either the ground or return signal. If it were the power, It wouldn't start. As the crank sensor is the same wire for power.

Testimonial: "it starts now, but i'm still getting p0340 code"

The cam sensor can short to ground. When it does it will knock out the crank sensor, no start. Plugging it back in and it starting means the short is gone, But the 340 code still says the cam sensor is bad. I have replaced a lot of them.

Where Do I start with a P0016 code on my 2005 Dodge neon (2.0L)

P0016-CRANKSHAFT/CAMSHAFT TIMING MISALIGNMENT
Does the car run? If it doesnt run it may have slipped time.If it does run, use a scope if available and check for a weak or erratic signal from the cam and crank sensors. The cam sensors routinely go out on these cars but a bad crank sensor can cause the code also.

I have a 2001 dodge neon that has this code obd11 what is it

code 11 means intermittent loss of either camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. check connections to both sensors. also look for any damage to the wires connected to each sensor. either sensor will set off a signal to pcm of a no crank referance signal detected during engine cranking.

98 dodge stratus, engine light came on and it died and won't start now. What could be wrong?

when you crank the engine over now, does it sound different than before? if yes, you probably have a broken timing belt. it is also common for the cam gear to slip out of position from the cam and cause an incorrect, but hard to diagnose, timing issue. other no start with check engine light on issues could be a faulty cam or crank sensor.

pull the codes from the vehicles computer. if there is a cam or crank sensor code, or if there is a code that says in some different wording "cam sensor signal does not match crank sensor singal", first check crankshaft to camshaft timing. if belt is ok and timing marks line up then i strongly suggest removing the bolt from the camshaft that holds the cam gear on. with the bolt and cam gear removed you should be able to tell if the cam gear has rotated on the camshaft. there should be a small pin sticking out of the camshaft. if it is broken off then you need to replace the camshaft. if the pin is still there and the timing is good then replace iether the cam or crank sensor depending on what code you have stored in the ecu memory. if the code is not for the cam/crank sensor then google search the code number e.g. "p0502" and your make and model.
