Check engine light comes on and cruise control quits, but car runs fine. The dealer resets, and a few minutes later it comes back on. I was told they need to replace 2 valves on top of the fuel tank for a cost of $800.
It depends on the error code(s) being reported. A very common one (P0457) is that the engine computer thinks the gas cap is loose. The gas filler neck often develops rust holes which cause this code, fix is repair usually quite easy, or replace. There are many other error codes. Look around your area for a Subaru shop other than the dealer. Your problem fix may much simpler and cheaper than the dealer, who often give the most expensive, worst case, repair options.

You may have to take it to a shop and have them connect their OBD tool to the computer and clear the deep memory. If you have a code left in the deep memory it can reapear like that. Good luck. Please rate me so I know how I'm doing. Thanks.

To properly diagnose problem and the seriousness of it, you should either purchase an OBD2 code reader or take it to a mechanic to read the code and diagnose the problem based on the code. I've also heard you can go to an Autozone store and their staff will let you use their code reader for free.
The OBDII port is located just inches below the steering wheel.

cruise light automatically comes on when there is a malfunction that causes c.e.l to illuminate, this occurs because your accelerator is electronically controled

Hi Barry Keller, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Hi,
?What is the actual check engine light CODE that is shown? Ask the dealer and report back or have it checked @ an autoparts store - many will check it for free.
