Hi I've got a daihatsu charade 1997 model 1.5 litre .engine light comes on at high revs once foot is off accelerater goes back to normal .. Also feels like it's starving for fuel sometimes too

It could be lamba sensor in exhaust gone faulty you need to get it on a diagnosic com puter really to check as modern engines have lots of sensor to monitor air fuel temparatures etc most garages have them now as all cars have electronic control units to control the running of the engine

You need to check the throttle stop cushion is making contact. The engine will hunt if you have air in the throttlebody coolant pipes, if the coolant sensor is faulty or if the TPS isn't calibrated.

My first thouhts are your ignition is still your problem, but upu haven't made it clear if the problem exists only when the engine is cold.

On the Charde you must push the pedal down before pulling the choke lever for the choke and fast idle linkages to engage... then start the engine.

The idle circuit consists of an emulsion tube and a solenoid. The solenoid is on the back of the carby and has a green wire running to it. If there isn't 12 volts on this at startup you wont be able to get the engine to idle without pedal assistance.

The carburettor also has an acceleration plunger that squirts a shot of fuel into the engine when trying to increase speed. This has a concetrina boot that can leak. It is situated on to op the carby.

The vacuum hoses need to connected correctly, especially one of the distributor hoses. That one must be connected to AD port on the carby. The following diagram is one of my modified layouts, but should work satifactorily. It is configured so that you can set the ignition timing a little more advanced than factory. When you set the timing make sure both hoses to the dizzy are removed and blocked. You adjust the dizzy position until the dimple on the flywheel lines up with the notch in the timing plate above.

For a test try blocking the hose coming from the oil cap to the bottom of the carby. The cap is also a PCV valve and if it's not clean it can allow excess air into the engine at idle.

My feeling is your points gap is not correct. It should be about the thickness of a hacksaw blade when open. The rubbing block on the points is notorious for rapid wear if hi temp grease hasn't been applied to the rotor lobes. A small gap will cause arcing under load and not provided sufficient dwell time for the coil to charge, resulting in a weak spark, missing, over fueling and lack of acceleration.

I also recommend you replace the plugs with Bosch Super 4's. They will last you a very long time and tend to be very forgiving with older worn engines.

Note: With the T terminal Shorted.5 +/- 2 deg BTDC
Ignition timing should be checked and adjusted, if necessary whenever spark plugs are replaced or any distributor maintenance is done. Ignition timing should be 3-7°BTDC at 750-850 RPM with the engine check connector terminal 11 (brown) shorted, Fig. 1. The engine check connector is located near the top of the transaxle.

Just an insight regarding the problem. On cold start up, let it rev high till it reaches it's normal temperature, the idle will drop then when engine is warm so you can leave the breather adjustment screw in it's normal position.

If it still fails, then you can be facing vacuum leaks or there can be worn out vacuum hoses that needs replacement. If vacuum hoses are good then the problem can be on the carb itself. The gaskets can be worn out that's why you have irregularities on the carburetor's vacuum supply.

If that's the case. The carburetor gaskets must be replaced.

1. That whistling noise is a loose fan belt,tighten it or replace it.

2.The odometer - just remove the end that goes into the engine and have the groove on it enhanced , it will work fine

1990 daihatsu applause 101a 1.6lt 5spd manual

I have had the same problem, replaced everything. Have not solved it. Sometimes car stops completely whilst driving. Your problrm will only happen when air con is on. There is a small electronic box under glove box. Turn small dial to the low postition or high, whichever fixes it and also bring your revs up with the idle screw on throttle body. I still have not solved my engine cut out problem, must be a faulty relay. I have replaced the computer and distributor but still have the problem

1999 Daihatsu Charade auto choke problems

Errors codes would be the logical thing to look at first. You may need to ask Toyota for the procedure in retrieving them.

Check that there aren't any obvious cracks in vacuum hoses.

Try pinching the PCV valve hose. If it stabilises you need to clean with some carby cleaner or replace.

The H series engines are prone to this and can generally be tracked to a vapour lock in the coolant hoses on the throttle body air valve (idle circuit).

My dash lights and shift lights are not coming on

These problems are always frustrating. Some of the charades swicth directly via the stalk on the column, while others have interposing relays. A common problem with dimmed headlights, indicators and dash lamps on the charade is caused by the fuse box retaining screws becoming loose .... these screws are also the -ve path back to the battery via the chassis.

If you have a meter, check voltages between the fuses and various metal parts to see if you can suss out a poor continuity path. Check your chassis strap between the battery -ve and the body is clean and tight.

If you have to sak you need to get a workshop manual. The engine hasn't changed since the late 80's, so a general Gregorys for Charade should be adequate.
