1997 Honda Passport 4wd
Make sure you have the correct factory Honda starter in your car , if its an aftermarket starter they may have replaced with cheapo starter, sometime the teeth that engauge starter to your flexplate will not mesh properly, because there different, causing the flex plate to fail. I had the same problem. I went thru 2 before I found this out..Hope this helps.
Please rember to rate me on my help. Thankyou!

To change flex plate you need to remove trans and transfer case...too complicated to write here.... You will need a decent manual to guide you through a job like that along with a really good jack, a decent set of tools and flat place to work where jack won't sink into ground. Personally I'd rather attach a pair of vise grips to my nose than do that job on the ground!!!
good luck will help with any questions you have along the way!

Remove the cover on top of the engine. It has fouth 10mm bolts that hold it on. This car has individual ignition coils for each cylinder. Remove the wiring harness connectors from each one, then remove the ignition coils. Check each coils resistance with an ohm meter, they should all have about the same resistance. If one is really low, high, or has no continuity, it will need to be replaced. You will notice that the coils have what is called a "plug boot" attached to each of them. First inspect them, and make sure there are no burnt places on them. If they have oil on the, you will need to replace the valve cover gasket. Next remove the plugs, and inspect/replace them. Assembly is reverse of removal. This should take care of it.
