Disconnect the shifting linkage from the transmission. It should be easy to remove the nut that secures it to the shaft. If you can now move the shifter lever (don't forget to apply the brakes) then the transmission needs work. If it cannot move, then the problem could be with the ignition key switch. Also try turning the steering wheel. Is it locked or free? There may also be a problem with the linkage from the brake pedal. Good luck.

Stuck cable

Could be the neutral safety switch, or the key switch. Will it crank in neutral instead of park ?

sounds like you may have a bad shift cable...is it column shift or counsel shift?

Purchase some Seafoam fuel system cleaner at Wal-Mart and run one can through 10 gallons of gas to clean the injectors. Also change the air filter. If it is dirty and stopped up it isn't getting air. You may end up changing the fuel pump itself. That would be my main idea of your problem here. The reason you can't get above the 4K mark is the rev limiter is kikking in to keep you from blowing the engine.

You do have drive and reverse,if you have park and neutral.It just the transmission cant transfer that power a new or rebuilt is the solution

It sounds like you have a problem with your security system if you mean that it won't allow you to shift out of park. BUT you should start off getting the engine error code read so you will know what the car is trying to tell you. Anytime you get a check engine light, the vehicle generates an error code.

Since you probably can't drive it, you need to rent, borrow or buy an OBDII scanner and get that code, so it gives you a clue on where to begin the troubleshooting process.

it sounds like your gearshift cable is broken..if you can jack up vehicle and support it safely,get someone to move shifter and look on driver's side of transmission and see if linkage is moving on trans..linkage is up near top of trans..i have seen this problem before
