Question edited for clarity, correct order, 'year make model'.
Not sure what you mean by 'passing gear', because there isn't one! Do you mean 'kick down', which you shouldn't be using to pass, because it means that you are leaving passing too late.
Automatic gear changing is dictated by the PCM. The only way to diagnose is to get an auto electrician. A Professional Grade scan tool computer can diagnose shift solenoids by instructing them to operate and verify that they did.
'Passing gear' is a term that means the transmission is down-shifted to a lower gear (e.g., from 5th gear to 4th gear) for improved acceleration to pass another vehicle. There is no physical component called a passing gear in the transmission.
To engage the 'passing gear' with an automatic transmission should require nothing more than pressing the accelerator pedal down firmly. The transmission should downshift automatically to the next lower gear (sometimes it will downshift two gear ratios, depending on your speed and how far you depress the accelerator pedal).
My father has a Ford Ranger when when time comes to pass another vehicle it does not drop on the passing gear everything else i normal, what could cause the passing gear to not engage
no year,? a 1973 civic? id bet not.. but......
many of these cars, have 4speed, A/T some are M/T
passing gear is A/T so on many there is a P/S or N/S switch
on the console. that sets the shift points, normal or racing....
depending year, the older cars had a passing gear cable.
that can be sticking or broke or adjusted wrong.
no year, no joy, is my ploy, no joke.
Are you sure you mean passing gear ? Or when it shifts into overdrive ? Passing gear would be when it downshifts from 3rd into second gear. If the car is OBD2 the check engine light should be on if the miss is steady. If the light is on you can have the computer scanned to find out which cylinder is failing.
hi passing gear is actually your transmision drpping down to second gear.if you hit the gas hard.if you hit the gas lightly it will only drop out of overdrive and go into third and not go into passing gear.
