Question about 1990 Chevrolet C1500

Heater control blows fose. replaced and does same thing. where might th short be. had it all working and while running blower motot it blew the fuse again

Get 12 volts when fuse is removed and key is on' remove heater contol and voltage is gone. relplaced heater cotroll and same thing happened' could it be the blower shorting even though it runs?

Of course it could be an internal short .

This code is a generic powertrain code. It is considered generic because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles (1996-newer), although specific repair steps may be slightly different depending on the model. Oxygen sensors with a heating element are common on today's engines. Heated Oxygen sensors (HO2S) are inputs used by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to determine oxygen content in the exhaust system. The PCM uses the information gained from the Bank 2,2 HO2S mainly to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Integral to this sensor is a heater element. While in pre-OBD II vehicles an Oxygen sensor was a one wire sensor, now they are more commonly 4 wire sensors: Two dedicated to the oxygen sensor and two dedicated to the heater element. The oxygen sensor heater basically decreases the time needed to achieve closed loop. The PCM controls the heater on-time. The PCM also continuously monitors the heater circuits for abnormal voltages or in some cases, even abnormal amperages. Depending on the make of vehicle, the Oxygen sensor heater is controlled one of two ways. (1) The PCM directly controls the voltage feed to the heater either directly or via a HO2S relay and a ground is supplied from the vehicle's common ground. (2) There is a fused 12 volt Battery feed (B+) that feeds 12 volts to the heater element anytime the ignition is on and the control of the heater is done by a driver in the PCM which controls the ground side of the heater circuit. Finding out which one you have is important because the PCM activates the heater under various circumstances. If the PCM detects an abnormally high voltage condition on the heater circuit, P0058 may set. This code is only referring to the heating circuitry half of the Oxygen sensor. Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0058 DTC may include: MIL (Malfunction indicator lamp) illumination There would likely be no other symptoms. Causes Potential causes of a P0058 code include: Faulty Bank 2,2 HO2S (Heated Oxygen sensor) Open in the heater control circuit (12 volt PCM controlled systems) Short to B+ (battery voltage) in the heater control circuit (12 volt PCM controlled systems) Open ground circuit (12 volt PCM controlled systems) Short to ground on heater control circuit (On PCM ground controlled systems) Possible Solutions First, do a visual inspection of the Bank 2, 2 HO2S (heated oxygen sensor) and it's wiring harness. If there is any damage to the sensor or any damage to the wiring, fix it as needed. Check for bare wires where wiring enters sensor. This often can fatigue and cause shorts. Make sure wiring is routed away from exhaust. Repair wiring or replace sensor as necessary If all appears okay, unplug the Bank 2,2 HO2S and verify that there is 12 volts B+ present with the key on engine off, (or ground is present, depending on the system). Verify the heater control (ground) circuit is intact. If so, remove the o2 sensor and inspect for damage. If you have access to resistance specifications you can use a Ohmmeter to perform a resistance test of the heater element. In

My1988 chev truck wil not started but will turnover no spark


the points have slipped or the electronic ignittion has failed or a fuse it blown

or the distributor isnt right in some way,,,, {the capacitor has gone short}
you could find the ignition coils is full of moisture because its housing has cracked

check the coil pack and its supply

99 cougar replaced steering column with key car still wont crank


Check battery voltage.should have a little more than 12 volts DC.then turn ign.switch on check fuses with test light with them in place.pull the one out for ign. Ohm it out across should read 0.00on electrical meter.if it is good look for stater fuse.follow same.if it is good could have bad starter.make sure you turn key off when removing fuses.

1983 Chevrolet C10 Silverado: The AC compressor and heater blower motor fan will not come on.


The brown wire at the speed switch is the power wire. Powers is then directed to the blower motor resistor throught the orange, lt blue and yellows wires. The blower motor receives power through the orange wire. Check for power at the fuse with the key on. If there is no power the problem could be the ignition switch or the wiring in between the switch and the fuse block

The fan control in the dashboard no longer turns the fan on at all. For a while, it would work intermittently, but now it's just dead. what is the best place to start troubleshooting this? thanks!


FIrst I would suggest checking the heater fuse. If it is OK, the nexxt thing I would do would to be to tap on the side of the blower motor with a hammer. If the brushes are stuck, some light tapping may loosen the brushes from the armature. If that does not work, remove the wiring connector from the blower motor, and check for voltage. Low should be 3 volts DC, low medium is 6 VDC, High medium is 9 VDC, and high is 12 VDC. If you have no voltage, and the fuse is good, you need a switch.

Check all fuses under the dash and hood with a 12 volts test light. If all okay, carefully remove sunroof switch and check for 12 volts. Check switch for continuity.

Relay/resistor heater blower


There are two fuses for the fan. One is probably a 20 Amp in the fuse panel in the cab and marked "Heater". or "Heater/AC" The second is under the hood may be marked Heater, Blower, or Fan and should be 30 Amp. The one in the cab supplies switched 12 volts to the fan speed switch. The one under the hood supplies the 12 volts to the relay. The relay is normally energized by the 12 volts through the 20 Amp fuse in the cab and through the switch. I think you find that the fan has the normal speeds except for missing HI with the underhood fuse removed, and will turn off with the ignition that way. There is no hazard in operating it that way but you may want to replace the resistor/relay assembly before it gets too cold. The relay is a pretty trouble free device in most cases, maybe you can find a deal on a good one at a junkyard.

The whole idea with the relay under the hood started back in the Sixties believe it or not. There is considerable voltage drop in the wiring between the fan switch and the blower fan motor. By adding the relay under the hood right next to the motor, the voltage drop was reduced, both by the shorter wire, and by using heavier wire to boot. The motor gets really close to the full system voltage when the relay is closed. In your case where the relay keeps the fan running, it can drain a battery rather quickly too!

No power to starter

Here's what happens in the start sequence when ypi turn the key.

When you turn the key, you should at least hear the starter solenoid click. When you turn the key the ignition switch sends 12 volts to the Starter solenoid ( really just a relay). The Solenoid closes and applies 12 volts (at a high current) to the starter motor to crank the engine. If you have a way to measure voltage, you should get 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solenoid. The solenoid is mounted on the top of the starter motor.If you get
no voltage, probably an ignition switch If you get 12 volts and the starter doesn't crank the starter is probably defective. At this [point take a small hammer and tap the starter motor, not hard, just medium. Sometimes this will cause the starter motor to catch next time you turn the key. Best bet is to remove the starter motor (with solenoid attached) and take it to an Auto Zone type store where they can check it out for you. Be sure you disconnect the ground terminal of the battery before you attempt to remove the starter motor.
