2003toyota corolla a 1.8 liter i am putting a timming chain in it and on my new cam gear i have 3 marks on it one says intake and strght across one that says exuse other mark is at 90degee from it

Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression. A. Set the timing mark to 0 on the timing chain cover by rotating the crankshaft clockwise. B. Component Removal Guidelines 1. If engine disassembly is required that involves removing the camshafts or timing gears, set the #1 cylinder to TDC compression, wipe away any oil, and mark the following items in relation to each other prior to disassembly: • Timing gears • Timing chain • Timing chain No. 2 NOTE This relationship MUST be maintained. remember 1 thing..dont confuse cam timing with ignition timing also if the belt or chain has alignment dots or marks on it ..it can be put on backwards and still line up marks correctly but but in a different position making the cam timming off i have done it and seen it done before like an old chevy when you put timming gear set on you line up the 2 dots alot of people think that is tdc and they set up ignition and go to start it and get pops and bangs well thats because the the install dots are actully 180 degrees out from tdc so you remove the distributor and turn it 180 deg. and now she starts right up i think you have 1 of these cams a tooth off or your using marks incorectly or belt or chain is backwards making dots align in different postion appearing correct

By :"specs" I assume you need install position? To index the gears, whne you take it apart, turn the crank pulley 'till the timing mark aligns with the "0" on the timing scale. Don't turn the crankshaft again. When you are ready to install the chain, locate the mark on the crank gear and align the mark on the cam gear so they point to each other. The mark on the crank gear should be at 12 o'clock and the cam gear mark at 6 o'clock. Make sure when you put the cam gear on the cam that the location pin fits into the gear to position it correctly. Jeep recommends that after putting the chain and gears on, you rotate the engine by hand and place the crank mark at 6 o'clock and the cam gear at 3 o'clock, then count the number of pins in the chain (pins, not links) between those two points. There should be 15 pins. If you are rebuilding the engine and have the cylinder removed, it's a good time to check the front crank pulley (some have the outer ring move on the rubber). Put a piece of flat steel across #1 cylinder with a bolt through the steel extending into the bore center. Turn the engine by hand 'till the piston contacts the bolt. Make a mark on the pulley and turn the engine in the opposite direction till contact is again made. Your timing mark on the pulley should be exactly between the two marks you made. If not, make a new mark at that point and use that as your actual TDC reference. If it is radically off, replace the pulley.
When setting up cam position I always use a degree wheel. If you are installing an aftermarket cam
its important to do that. If you're just replacing a stock chain, You will be fine with the method I've outlined.

there are special tools pin to lock crank in correct position and cams have flat plate that goes across into both at rear of cams small section goes up from memory, the cam gears have no dowel pin/locating pin to camshaft you do bolts up last when all are locked in position and grenade pin (locking)pin in tensioner is removed and chain is tight then hold cams with shifter or spanner(wrench) on cam flats and do up cam gear to camshaft bolts on each cam.
hole in front cover just above crank pulley at 11O clock, blind blanking plug must be removed to put in chain tensioner pin, crank blanking plug on your left side when looking at crank pulley(side of block) remove and locking pin goes into there when at TDC no1. and cams should be in position to lock with plate as described above.may not be any timming marks on chains or gears due to the locking tools needed and relied on for correct position.

TIMMING IS NOT ADJUSTABLE. IT IS ALL COMPUTER CONTROLED. THE ONLY TIMMING IS THE MARKS ON THE CHAIN AND GEARS.

The 2.2 liter engine uses colored links on the timing chain to align with the marks on the gears. You just have to rotate the engine to where the copper chain link is up on the upper right side of the intake can gear--aligned to the INT diamond on the gear. Then the silver link should be down at about 5 O-Clock on the crankshaft timing mark. The other silver link should then be aligned to the mark on the exhaust cam sprocket. See picture below.

For the 3.0 liter engine, there are marks on the belt that line up with marks on the gears. The book calls out special tools to hold the cam sprockets in alignment while the belt is put on. There is also a special tool to lock the belt onto the crankshaft sprocket. See pictures below.

To align both sets of timing marks, turn engine crankshaft to the right with belt on cam and crank. Once you have done this the crankshaft alignment mark (on front of crankshaft gear) will line up with mark to the rear of gear on engine block.The two cam gear timing marks should be alines across from one another. The right cam gear is the intake side and the left side is the exhaust side. After removing the belt turn the exhaust cam down 1/2 notch. Timing mark on exhaust 1/2 notch down from the intake side. Install new belt and recheck everything to make sure it's all correct. Hope this will help you.

possibly you are 180 degrees off.
the timing marks are dimples on the gears to align up.
paint will be no use at all to use and have never heard of anyone using paint .
use paint on a crack balancer for the timing mark ony

the timing is set to 8 degrees at 700 rpm...if it helps any

I have a similar problem. I just replaced the water pump and now the POS wont start. Like it is not getting fuel>
