Why would my car stall out when the transaxle light comes on?

I then turn off the car and restart it and it runs fine for a day or so and does it again

The transaxle sensor may be defective, main thing is to make sure there's still transmission fluid in it so it don't get destroyed. Check the fluid level. If fluid level is ok then it's probably the sensor, if you find out what kind of sensor it is and if you can afford a new one then get er done, if you're poor then you may be able to bypass it for a while, just need to know how the sensor works, by pressure or by volume or by fluid level, then you can figure out how to bypass it.

SOURCE: vam stalling

there are too many reasons...

it could be fuel pump,, it could be ignition coil overheating, it could be the computer itself...

you need two things for the engine to run,

1 is gas
2nd is ignition,,

with these two misfiring or your loosing one of them, it will stall...

i hope i was able to give you some thoughts....

SOURCE: 2001 focus. Replaced plugs, wires and coil pack.

Have you replaced the timing belt? if not i would highly recommend doing so. these cars need to have the timing belt replaced before it breaks otherwise it can and will cause major engine damage.

have fuel injection system cleaned

Testimonial: "Thank you for the quick reply. This was one of my first thoughts along with possibility of a blocked fuel filter, fuel pump, or plugs/coil connectors."

Trouble restarting / 1997 ford contour first

If I'm understanding the symptom correctly its probably the torque converter clutch solenoid.(TCC) If your handy get the repair manual and check out the section for torque converter clutch solenoid.(TCC)
This solenoid locks the engine to the transmission.
Its disconnected by the brake light switch.
It will only engage if your vehicle is at opertaing temperatures, cooling fan has cycled twice and traveled above approx 40 mph's.
If the brake light switch is defective it woun't tell the TCC to let go and your car will stall out but will restart again and you will be able to drive. But if its the TCC it self you will be able to start but you will stall out the minute you put it in gear. She will not disengage the converter unless engine is NOT at operating temperatures.(ENG COOLED DOWN)
You can buy repair manual and check it out yourself.
If you test drive it remember the only thing you can control is the speed of the vehicle. Keep it under 40mph's . The TCC needs all three criterias before it engages.
If this is your problem the TCC cost about $75 bucks.
Its located at the rear of the transaxle four or five bolts to remove the transaxle plate a little fluid will fall out . (nothing to scare over) Take a picture of how the TCC is routed with your cell phone unplug it and take it out. Route the new one as per your pic, plug it in, put a new gasket on the plate and bolt it back.
Check fluid level and test drive . Then recheck fluid level. good luck
If you give to a shop it will cost anywhere from $150 to $250.
