If you move the shifting lever in my truck it doesn't move the gears. I took the lever out and it seems to be missing a piece. It goes in the middle in some google pics it seems to be black. Any help?

it sounds like the plastic Teflon cap on the bottom of the shifter might have broken and that will cause the shifter to go beyond the position of the gear seleted, pull the boot inside of the car console and then the 4screws that hold down the shift lever, pull the shift lever straight up and you should see the round tip at the bottom of the shaft and that's where the plastic Teflon cap goes, make sure there is no pieces in the way when you put the new one on replace all in the reverse of removal and you should be good to go,
P.S. make sure that the plastic cap goes into the slot or it will not work.
