I have a 1999 Elantra 2.0L. It is overfueling with gas smelling in the car, very high fuel consumption. Could it be a faulty or dirty crank sensor

Hi Andre Strydom, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Is your engine light on? I have a good idea what is wrong

  • Andre Strydom Sep 27, 2015

Hi Richard, no the engine light does not come on. It starts good, this morning though it backfired once. Maybe timing thats not set properly? The previous owner say the rings were replaced and she needs to go on a diagnostic machine although he is not sure about this. The car goes well and then it feels like she is flooding like a car with a carb, I just accelerates ans she moves smooth again. Ihope this gives a better indication

The most common cause for this condition is a leaking purge valve located under the hood. This purge valve goes bad all of the time causing a few different conditions. It could go bad causing a hard start after filling up with fuel or it could be leaking fuel vapors causing this smell inside the vehicle you are describing.

Also, be sure to check the fuel-rail dampener, around the fuel pressure line, fuel injectors and o rings VERY carefully for any fuel leaking as this can cause a gas smell inside the vehicle.

SOURCE: How to improve the fuel efficiency?

Consider getting this info on ADDING Hydrogen power to your fuel. Raises fuel mileage 25% to 50%+.
http://tinyurl.com/6zmchd

Imagine if it works - raise your fuel mileage to 21+ in stop n go driving, up tp 35+, maybe 40 mpg with a steady low cruise on the highway, at 60-62 mph.

only costs $170-$200 if you can do it yourself, if you can change pcv / oxygen sensors / plugs / fuel filters, YOU can do it.
Else, pay a mechanic an extra $200 for 2 hours work for him/her to install in 45 minutes.

Could a faulty or dirty crank censor be the reason for overfueling. Gas smell inside the car and very high fuel consumption

This can be caused by a variety of problems:
- very dirty air cleaner element- incorrect ignition timing- emissions system faulty (EGR valve blocked)- fuel injection system faulty (pressure relief valve blocked)- MAP sensor failed- throttle position sensor faulty- coolant temp sensor faulty- air temp sensor faulty

For most of these a trouble code should be available to steer you in the right direction. Is the check engine light flashing a code?

Buick regal 92 3.8L Horrible fuel mileage

Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

1999 ford Explorer 4.0 v6 4x4 will cranck but not start has spark

Honestly it's probably just dirty spark plugs. Did you pull any of the spark plugs and inspect the tips for build up? A couple things to remember:

1.) If the timing chain broke, the valves wouldn't be opening so you wouldn't have any air coming out of the exhaust during crank. You said it smells like you're getting fuel, so I'm assuming that means you're smelling the exhaust fumes, right?

2.) The crank sensor tells the ignition system when to send a spark to the plugs. If you're getting good spark, it's unlikely that the crank sensor is faulty.

If it's too soon for spark plugs to need replacing, check your sensors. A faulty oxygen sensor for example could cause your engine to run 'rich', resulting in faster crud build up on spark plug tips.
