i would check the fuel line see if it has a clog. also check the fuel pump/filter. it may need replaced. the carborator may also need to be cleaned/rebuilt.
There is a fuel pump relay but no pressure relay. If the pump is working then that eliminates the relay as the cause. I would disconect the fuel line to the carburetor and check the fuel pressure there. I believe it is supposed to be 12-14lbs. If it is less, the pump could be going bad.
FIRST RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE BY REMOVING GAS CAP REMOVE FUEL PUMP RELAY START ENGINE UNTIL IT DIES LACK OF FUEL. FUEL FILTER IS MOUNTED TO THE RIGHT FRAME RAIL.NEAR THE FUEL TANK.YOU NEED A FLARE NUT WRENCH TO LOOSEN FUEL LINE AT FILTER AND A ADJUSTABLE WRENCH HOLD FILTER LARGE NUT WHILE LOOSEN FUEL LINE THIS KEEP FROM TWISTING FUEL LINES WHILE LOOSEN FUEL LINE.BESURE TO GO TO DEALERSHIP AND BUY NEW O - RINGS AT FUEL FILTER LINES.LUBRICATE NEW O- RINGS WITH CLEAN ENGINE OIL.WHEN INSTALLING NEW FUEL FILTER DONT OVER TIGHTEN FUEL LINES CUTTINGTHE O -RINGS AT FUEL FILTER.IF SO THEY WILL LEAK GAS WHEN YOU START UP ENGINE.WHEN DONE CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS WHEN DONE DONT DRIVE UNTIL YOU CHECK FOR LEAKS FIRST.
when was this vehicle as serviced? this could one of several issues.
1 the idle jet on the carborator maybe dirty so the engine is not getting enough fuel at tickover to keep running. 2 the fuel filter is blocking up and may need replacment. 3. the carborator may need an overhaul as the float chamber is not activating correctly. 4. fuel cap may be blocked give a run with the fuel cap off see if that helps. if you get aload hiss each time you fill up that indiates a blocked fuel cap which will need clearing or replacing. 5. dirt in the fuel line if filled from jerry cans contaminents can get in th tank and block the line. when you put pressure on the gas this causes higher vacum from the pump and hides the problem. 6 airfilter may be blocking and needs replacement so there is not enough air at ldle. 7 check plugs if they are sooty or covered in white then the mix is wrong and needs resetting. or indicats reduced fuel or air to engine. 8. plugs may need replacement.
you may have a gold coloured filter that screws into your carb. Unscrew it and check to see if you can blow through it. It may be clogged. Also you can check for fuel at carb by loosening the fuel line going into the carb. Crank engine after loose. Should have gas coming from it.
The filter is external. Located on the passenger side frame rail, about 4-5 ft from the tank. round, metal (or if previously replaced-- might be plastic). Are you sure you have a carb? 1988 models were throttle body type fuel injection. If it is TBI, you may not be getting power to the internal fuel pump. Are you seeing a fault code (the check engine light flashing)?
the fuel filter sounds like the problem, are you sure its carborated not fuel injucted because fuel injuction has a regulater for the fuel if it is stuck open you would pump gas to the fuel rail and back to the fuel tank
the car is low on compression so you could have a hole in a piston or a bad valve the pistons in this engine are its weakest point especially if you try to crank up the boost to far above stock they can only handle about 14psi with ocasional trips above that.
also these cars do not have a carb they are throttle bodie injected so if you check your compression and is ok then try injectors
