Maybe, but not necessarily. Its possible your shift linkage/cable has loosened or stretched. Have a reputable transmission shop check that. (easy for them to do)

2000 ford mercury 3.0, shifter wont move. had a fender bender, put it into park and it wouldn't come back out.

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

Problem shifting gears with column, park is reverse, 2 became drive?? 1996 mercury marquis with 197,000 miles. Will not start when I finally put it in park (had to really slide it hard to park) and then...

Very likely you have a loose connection on your transmission shift linkage, or you have a shift cable that is no longer tight.

First jack up the vehicle and secure with a jack stand. Check the connection on the drivers side of the transmission to make sure it is connected tight. There should be a nut holding the shift lever in place. If it is correctly fastened, remove the steering column plastic covers by unscrewing screws and check for loose connections.

My 96 Grand Marquis wont go into gear when I crank it up, can you help me? Before I put the keys in, it will switch all gears smoothly but once I crank it up it will not switch out of park.

for a quick fix, try putting the car in neutral, put the key in and start the car. you'll have to have the problem checked out. the shift lock solenoid circuit is faulty.

Stuck in Park

The park lock mechanism is deactivated by the brake switch. Check to make sure the brake lights are working before any other repairs are made. When the key is in the on position and you depress the brake pedal it allows you to take the car out of park. One can usually turn the key one click and not have power to the park lock mechanism. Then depress the brake pedal and put the car in neutral. With your foot on the brake pedal you can start the car and drive normal but when you put the car in park the process will have to be repeated. Often times one of the wires to the brake light switch on the brake pedal gets brittle and causes intermittent contact or no contact. Check this first.
