Park lock out failed.!

moving in park is shift cable failure.! (or either end bits)

the operators guide, shows the steps to bypass the park lock out

it shows a hidden device near the shifter.,

got that book? lost it?

you activate that, and that allows shifting out park.

a nice feature to tow a dead engine car.

now made illegal thanks to US GOBment.

to fix it we have the drawings to diagnose it.

got a volt meter?

first is :

1; check fuses first.

2: make sure brake lamp (rear or car) work.

3: check park solenoid voltage?

I would make sure your shifter cable is intact and the transmission is actually in park. The safety switch is located on the transmission and if the shift cable is not moving the shift linkage all of the way into park the car will still roll, and will not start in gear.

SOURCE: dodge magnum gear shift

I had the same problem. The interlock was not the problem. I had the shifter replaced (at my own expense because drive train warranty would not cover). After examining the old shifter discovered source of problem is a plastic cam on the front of ths shifter. A tiny PLASTIC ear which connects to a small spring had broken off. I repaired this by putting in a small screw where the ear had been. Incidentally, my tow truck driver had also seen the same problem on several Chrysler 300s. In my estimation this is a poor design on Chrysler's part.

SOURCE: shift gear is locked cannot shift out of park gear

I had the same problem but my cousing, who is a mechanic, opened the whole thing up and removed the safety catch. Now, this is not the best of ideas because the car will shift now without your foot being on the brake but I have had it this way for a while and no troubles shifting in or out anymore.

SOURCE: My gear shift is stuck and will not move from park

do the brake lights work? the system has a lock out that keeps you from moving out of park unless the brake circuit is activated, hence no brake lights no park lock out release, if the brk lights do work u most have a stuck or defective park lock out solenoid.

97 nissan quest will not move when in gear and the vehicle is rolling freely when in park. ....suggestions? Grinding sound when in gear and the drive shift on the driver side is spinning free

Well, there's a Pin that holds the transmission gears in place when you've got the car in park. This Pin blocks the gearbox from moving... either the pin isn't fully engaging the gearbox, or it's just broken.
If it's not engaging, it's just a question of adjusting the shifter linkage. That can be fixed relatively quickly.

However, the accompanying grinding sounds really make it sound like it's broken.

Car will go in reverse and drive but will not lock when in park you put it in park but it continues to roll

there is a pin in the transmission that holds it in place when park is engaged, there is a possibility that the pin is damaged therefore there is nothing to lock it.

I cannot get my gear shift (automatic) on my 1996 suzuki esteem glx to shift from park to neutral... it won't leave park.I am trying to tow it behind another vehicle but for some reason my gear shift won't...

There should be a piece of plastic right near the shifter, you might have to get a little pick or something to pop it out, generaly it is oval shaped. Under that there is a little button you can push to release it. If that doesn"t work feel free to let me know and i will be happy to research it for you in the morning once at my shop. swiftautorepairs.com

2000 Rodeo has intermittenly starting problems

It sounds as if your neutral safety start switch may be failing. This switch only allows for the safe start of an engine when the automatic transmission is in either park or neutral. It seems when you move around the gear selector you get it back to a spot where the switch allows the engine to start. Next time this happens while in park, try wiggling around the gear selector or place your foot on the brake (so you don't roll away) and place the transmission in to neutral. If it fires up you know to either adjust or replace the switch for the park position.

I hope this might have helped,
Tom

1990 Suzuki Escudo 4 wheel drive

As far as I know the procedure should go something like this...

Stop the vehicle, engage the parking brake and if applicable, get out and turn the hubs on the front wheels from Free, to Lock.(You may not have these on a Suzuki, they may be auto-lockers)

Get back in the vehicle and put the transmission shift selector into Neutral.

If you have a manual transfer case, move the selector-shaft to 4x4-High, or 4x4-Low -- whichever is desired. Now, putting the vehicle in gear with the transfer case is sometimes somewhat difficult. As long as the vehicle's transmission is in neutral, don't worry, the gears inside the transfer case are big and beefy -- Don't be afraid to be rough -- Again as long as the transmission is in neutral. You may also have to disengage the parking brake and slightly let the vehicle roll forward or back with your foot-brake to get the Transfer case to lock into place.

Once 4x4 of the selected High, Or Low range is selected, usually indicated by the vehicle jerking slightly with a slightly loud clank/thud. Move the Transmission selector out of neutral into your desired gear (Drive if Automatic, if Manual, whichever gear you pull out from). and voila! You should now be in 4-Wheel-Drive.

To disengage 4-Wheel-Drive. Just reverse the steps.
