I have a red warning light on the dash behind the steering wheel and cannot figure out how to turn it off

you cannot turn the light off, the lights are letting you know that there is some thing wrong with the car and not to drive it unless the service man tell you its okay, the only way to remove or turn off the light is to have cen-tech trilangual code reader that will clear the warning signal.

most vehicles have the switch on the steering column, on top just behind the steering wheel. Others have the switch in the center of the dash above radio/temp controls. It has a red triangle symbol on it.

The battery ran out of power because the alternator is not charging it.
Have the alternator output tested and take a look at the fuses.

one of the wheel speed sensors is out!

There is a bulb failure relay under the dash that sometimes fails. It is a red round cylinder shaped relay that should be just behind the steering wheel.

The Enhanced Traction System warning light may come on for the following reasons:

If you turn the system off by shifting to SECOND (2) or FIRST (1), the warning light will come on and stay on. To turn the system back on,shift to THIRD (3) or AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE

If the traction control system is affected by an engine-related problem, the system will turn off and the warning light will come on.

If the Enhanced Traction System warning lightmcomes on and stays on for an extended period of time when the system is turned on, your vehicle needs service. Adjust your driving accordingly..

WELL SOUNDS LIKE THE BATTERY OR ALT WENT BAD BUT MAKE SHERE ALL THE BELTS ARE ON

the steering wheel lock doesnt lock in till the steering wheel is turned a bit .as for the dash lights and wipers i would need to play with it to sort this one out ,because it could be anything froma earth wire to ??

As long as the light is on the airbag system is disabled.

I would suspect that your clockspring behind the steering wheel is going bad. I would have someone with a scan tool that is able to retrieve trouble codes from the airbag system check it for codes to verify this. If so then steering wheel and steering column trim would have to be removed to access the clockspring to replace it.
