alot of after market gasket sets are the 25Nm and 3 lots of 60deg and the extra 10deg bolts are meant to be replaced (use once only) alot of bolts tend to start stretching when doing last 10 deg use oil on threads and washers under bolts 25 and 3 lots of 60deg is correct and more commonly used.

I have a 2002 Ford ranger 2.5 td WL engine. I need to know what is meant regarding 1st stage, 2nd stage and 3rd stage cylinder head torque settings

as the head bolts are being torqued up there is a movement on the head gasket sort of like ironing the wrinkles out
BY pulling the head bolts down in the correct rotation ( sequence) this allows the "wrinkles" to be worked to the outside of the gasket and so the head is pulled down evenly on to the block with a flat gasket in between
The first stage is to get all the bolts to a predetermined tension so that the head is flat
the next stage starts to flex the head to carry out the "ironing" effect
this is repeated until the gasket is flat and the head is also flat on it
I my self use the tightening sequence for smaller ft/lb settings or degrees and almost twice the number of rotations as required because it makes for a better control of the stretching process of the bolts
You should be tightening it down to angles of degrees and not ft/lbs
The reason for this is that the head is clamped on by the stretch of the head studs and that stretch has to be even on all bolts
using a tension wrench means that the wrench will click off at a predetermined setting BUT that doesn't mean that the stretch is correct as the friction loading on the threads of the studs will vary according to thread cleanliness and finish, water or oil in the holes, wet or dry /rusty threads
BY using angles for tension, there is near a guarantee that each bolt is stretched the right amount regardless of the thread conditions

This is the info for the 2.8d CRDI 2008-11 engine code ENS (51C)

1 Replace Head Bolts
2 Stage 1 Tighten to15 Nm
3 Stage 2 Tighten to 30 Nm
4 Stage 3 Tighten to 85deg
5 Stage 4 Tighten to 85 deg
6 Stage 5 Tighten to 85 deg


If it is the 01-08 model 2.8 CRD engine code R2816K4 then it is this one
Stage 1 - Bolts 1 -18 = 30 Nm
Stage 2 - Bolts 1 -10 = 75 deg
Stage 3 - Bolts 11 - 18 = 50 deg
Stage 4 - Bolts 1 - 18 - 75 deg


If it is the Grand Cherokee then they fit 3.0 CRD, 4.7, 5.7 and the 6.1 SRT-8 engines. I can supply the details if needed. I hope that helps you.

Need torque settings for mazda xa 3.0l diesel 4 cyl

con rod bolt tension is 55-60ft/lbs
crank shaft main bearings is 80-85 ft/lbs
fly wheel bolts95-100 ft/lbs
crank shaft pulley nut 94-123 ft/lb
head studs tension 80-95 ft/lbs working in a spiral direction from no 1 stud directly in the centre of the head. Pull down in 10ft/lb increment starting at 20 ft/lbs
valve clearance is .010" both valves cold but after warming engine and re-tensioning the head studs re set valves to .012 both valves
injector retaining nuts tension12-17 ft/lbs

!st thing is get the revised head gasket (used on 1993 up) for this engine from VW or Felpro, always use new head bolts or a repeat failure will occur. Using the revised head gasket here is the procedure to torque the head down, it is done in stages. PLease go to this site and read the whole procedure.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces on the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head.
  2. Install a new gasket and the exhaust manifold. Torque the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. 16 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    2. 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
