What problem could I be having on my 2001 Toyota Ipsum 2AZ engine? it fails to pick up speed when accelerator is pressed...

you have to check 1st using diagnostic equipment when you know the fault code , solving is easy

Could be a pipe fallen off under manifold,check all hoses check inlet manifold gasket.

smoke is a bad sign, on low mileage engines say below 250,000 miles and with noise worst. there must be no noise, on this engine.
no HLA's to rattle there. has solid bucket tappets.
then mean they never make noise unless, its damaged or lacking oil.
are you doing silly SYN oil changes it 25,000 miles or at 5 to 7k miles.?
id do a cylinder leak down test. by hand to protect engine from
further damage, (I do that on all DOHC engines (savvy i am)

toyota recall? call the dealer and give them the VIN

why not scan it. (next time.)
plug in the scan tool (rented, barrowed, most stores loan them)
and scan it.

btw new cars , log (DTC log) loss of power.
so newer cars might take, a scan tool to clear it

I have the same car as yours, a 2003 Toyota Ipsum 240I with a 2AZ-FE engine and had the same Problem. I suggest you change the one closest to the battery (the one with a yellow tape). I prefer the original actually got from yahoo auction.

Sounds in dyer need of compleat tune up. Good luck

Lack of power can be several things. one to look at would be the catalitic converter. it clogs up and your engine can't breath. also on the other end check your air filter. again can't breath

Check the fuel filter and then make sure that the engine is tune up and check the timing belt.

Your filter is visable by looking under the car. its near the exhaust pipe again, but toward the front of the car. tucked near the plastic air shield.
