I would,nt have thought it would be a good thing to manually shift into first gear whilst going downhill, only use manual shifting from start off ,and overtaking but then the kickdown should be ok for that , not to be used as a brake , how steep is this hill ? i know this isn't what you asked but i dont think theres a problem with it not doing that

My 2005 Kia Sorento won't shift pass 3rd gear going up hill it will shift to 4th when it level past the top. When driving on flat level ground or downhill it shifts perfectly

that is norm normal. but no engine told.
your first car ever.>? or sold the Lincoln 6L for a Kia.
a shock that;

the shifting charts are in the service manual and the TCM holds this chart in its"TCM" brain
and RPM of engine and road speed and engine load indexes this table ( and set hard no changes by you)
and all upshifts are delayed by all 3 things I told above. even tranny temps too.(too hot)
also smaller engines even shift latter , lacking the HP to do all that.
i guess is a 4speed box + OD and TCC?
the box (trannY) tries
to no lug the engine,
not overheat the transmission
and safe fuel.
even driver demand like WOT will force the tranny to 2nd gear uphills.(wide open throttle)
also and weak engine shows it is overloaded too soon
and tell the TCM this fact and the TCM shift later or not at all.
that is how ALL EBOXs work
if check engine lamp is on , this can be weak engine
or transmission errors ,causing late shifts.
scan the PCM/TCM and see what';s up?

factors not told or hard to express
engine is weak
hill is too tall (steep) called load)
right foot is too heavy
scans show engine or transmission errors

I have a Toyota Corolla 1,6 year 1984. Well maintained, services up to date. Will it be detrimental to engine if I drive steep hills with the car? I have to climb a steep hill to reach work.

No
not if you drive it accordingly
steep hills are best negotiated in low fears with plenty of rpm applied
for example on a steep grade with a manual 1st or 2nd or possibly 3rd and the rpm around 2000 constant will cause it no harm
automatics will go to first automatically so keep the rpm at that mark
engine damage is experienced when the gear selected is too high and the engine is placed under extreme load so down shift to allow the engine to work easily
When going down hill select first and only use the brakes to maintain the 2000 rpm range and allow the engine compression to hold the car speed back
the rule of thumb for experienced drivers is this
you select the same gear to go down that it took to come up

Automatic drives fine yet gears won't shift up steep hills

depending on the type of transmission, they usually use throttle pressure to determine down shift older cars use a cable attached to the carb or throttle body, newer cars use the tps signal to the transmission comp. to determine downshift points under load

Hard shifting

probably just your transmission being old and wear and tear catching up to it. engine braking is a good thing in a manual but since automatics cant judge how far to let out a clutch mechanism that doesnt exist to make it smooth, it usually causes more wear and tear than its worth. maybe time for a transmission rebuild and time to leave engine braking to manual transmissions. $30 brake pads vs $2000 transmission. hope this helps ya

Hi I'm an owner of a 1998 Honda Oddysey. I would like know the mechanics of using its automatic gear transmissions and specific function. For example when do I use D3 or D2 etc... And how do I shift...

Hi,
Gear usage.
The Drive is for normal driving.
D2 is for hill/steep climbing drive.
D3 is for hill/steep going down drive.
If you have overdrive button, use it when you exceed 60mph.
That's all you have to do when you see roads that is going up nor down.

Thaks for asking FixYa!

When do I use the d 5 gear in acura 2003 tl 3.2 liter

Pretty much all the time!

D3, D4, and D5 are all just *DRIVE* like on any automatic transmission, EXCEPT
that the number next to the D is the "highest gear the automatic transmission will go into".
The Acura just gives you a choice, in case you don't want to go into a higher gear (like if it's slippery traction or a steep hill, etc.)

1 means: Manual gear. FIRST GEAR ONLY.
2 means: Manual gear. SECOND GEAR ONLY.
D3 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 3rd gear.
D4 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 4th gear.
D5 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 5th gear.
