this is known as death wobble because it feels like you are going to die but slowing down will end it.
The cause for death wobble are:
try to realign the front end. If it doesnt help, then you do indeed have worn steering / suspension components.

It sounds like you have a bad c v or constant velocity joint. Look under the car next to the wheel look for a rubber accordian type unit, if the rubber is torn or lose the grease has escaped and damaged the joint. You can replace it yourself, but if your not mechanically inclined would say take it to a shop.

It sounds like you have either a broken steel belt in your tire or a worn out idler arm in your steering assembly. Other causes may be a bent wheel, a flat spot on the tire or worst case your brake rotor / wheel hub may be loose. If the rotor / wheel hub is loose you may have severly damaged wheel bearings. Front wheel drive cars have CV joints in the axles to permit the wheel to turn for steering. The CV joint is basically a universal joint on steroids. When they ware out it can cause this type of condition.
