SOURCE: distributor cap compatability
your caps should be fine between a 90 and 91 one thing you should also check is that the kanooder valve on a 90 is different from one on the 91 these would not be compatable they redid the duflage sensor plug that goes from the kanooder valve to the wiring harness. you might need a kanooder valve mod kit these are really cheap you can grab one from checker for about 20 bucks well worth it trust me.
Its easy to set the distributor timming all you have to do is to aligne the crankshaft pully to the marks and see which cylinder is on firing or rather on power stroke you may hve to remove the vavle cover to get the correct cylinder at power stroke which will have the valves (inlet & exhaust )closed.
At the distributor cap removed check out the rotor as to where it is and thts your number one, since you know the firing order so from here you should be able to get the wiring of the distributor correct.
Good Luck.
SOURCE: I need to know the firing order for a 1991
1988-95 5.7L and 7.4L Engines
Firing Order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Distributor Rotation: Clockwise
SOURCE: I need the possition of #1 on the distributor cap
Remove cap. Remove number one spark plug. Turn key off...have friend manualy turn engine over until you feel air blow out of number one spark plug hole. when you feel this look at rotor in distributer...it will be pointing close to number one. Set your wires on cap to coincide with that. Hope this helps:)

Do a compression test and make sure it is not a mechanical problem.Could be burnt valve, bad cam,or broken valve spring. If you know which cylinder is missing pull the valve cover and check the valves and see if they are all moving up and down evenly when you turn the motor over.Just disable the vehicle from starting or you can do it with it running.Hope this helps.Good luck.
