2005 Ford Focus. Air is blowing out of the floor vents and defrost vents but not dash vents. Also the knob will not go onto the dash vent option it's like it just springs back up.

A failure has occurred in the HVAC system, legally, when a fault happens the hvac system will default to defrost/floor. Further diagnostics will be needed to determine issue.

SOURCE: There is no air flow

You need part GM Part number 89018675 or ACDelco 15-73596. The Mode Selector Actuator. What happens is the part is a CHEAP part POORLY designed and when it goes to turn the flaps inside the HVAC unit its the plastic gear slips instead of turning the flap!!!

Just to forward you you might want a deal to install this art for you unless your good at fixing your own vehicle, because you need SMALL sockets and a lot of patience to get this part in!!!

The part is ALMOST directly above the steering shaft for your steering wheel, so theres a lot you got to remove before you will even see them!!!

I only recommend you to have a dealer put this part in for you, unless you have your own service manual!!

Because there is 5 of these darn things and if you pick the wrong one you will have to do it all over again!!!

3 on the Drivers side and 2 on the Passengers side!!

But replacing this part SHOULD solve all your problems!! AS it did for me and i was having the same issues as you have described!!

SOURCE: Vent control

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.

SOURCE: PROBLEM WHEN SELECTING THE DIRECTION FOR THE AIR

Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.

SOURCE: Problem with air not coming out of vents.

Check for a vacum leak from the engine to the a/c.The color of the hose is black. Also check if the heater control valve hose is unplugged. If you have vacuum the it sounds like the door for the vent/floor/defrost is broken.

SOURCE: All Air Conditioning blows our the defrost vents

Some thing you could look at would be this. The control is usually fed by a vacuum line or small hose thats is connected to your intake manifold.
With a cold engine, look for a skinny vacuum hose that runs from the intake toward the fire wall . It should be going inside the cab and connecting to the A/C vent control. Some times the hose becomes disconnected or splits or cracks due to heat under the hood.
Thats usually the trouble.
I hope this helps you.

How to repair

i'd think that the vent adjuster knob/slider is not working correctly strip out the heater panel around the control knobs and check the vent direction is working properly either stiff operation so a little wd40 on the cable would probably do the trick or some thing causing the vent itself to not move

I have a 2005 Ford Focus. My vent distribution knob turns freely but does not change air direction. It remains blowing from the defrost vents. I pooped off the face around the knobs and stereo to look...

The part you're describing is the blend door actuator. It diverts air through the different ports, (floor, vent, defrost, mix). The good news is depending on what you need (new lever or new blend door) the price runs about $30-40. As far as ease of installation, it sounds like you have unobstructed access so replacing it shouldn't be too difficult.
