There are two actuators. Likely ou're hearing the transfer case shift actuator (from driver seat). A common failure is ground to the front axle actuator. If you have helper select 4WD, find the front axle actuator behind front right wheel and see if it makes noise. If not, see following video.
The Front Axle Actuator is probably your problem. I have replaced my Actuator TWICE in the last 7 years.... The Reason for the Service 4WD was the Failed Attempt. If you are able to test the Power going to the Actuator and there is none, then you have one of 3 switches that went bad but Chevrolet/GM is known for having the Defective Actuators. Aftermarket Actuators are available.
Can you supply more information? year and model of vehicle, does it have an actual shifter lever or buttons? and what are all the available options to shift into?
If you have a honest mechanical manual 4x4 that you reach down to the floor and shift into 4x4 with a lever, and 4x4 doesnt work you got problems with your transfer case or you got some bent or missing linkages.
if you have a push button system for 4x4, then you could have a number of problems, bad actuator motor, bad wiring, etc.
yea its not shifting again like before ? sounds like your transfer case solonoid has possably gone bad again .. these are a sometimes dont work item .. It is what shifts the transfer case into gear and it might be a little worn or weathered and not letting the switch kick it in gear all the way from the N position. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.
it is either the control switch or the actuator. look if light is flashing on push button switch. if so it is stuck. you can check actuator on front axle, to watch and see if it is moving.
