1995 Ford Escort Wagon Automatic, Won't shift

Hi there,

Most modern automatic cars require the driver to depress the brake pedal first, to allow releasing the gear out of Park.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

Honda crv won't shift into gear

If you are talking about moving the console shifter, step on the brake first. If you are talking about a n issue where it is in gear and it is an automatic, check your fluid level. Then check solenoid wiring connectors and then the lower gear selector solenoid pair, It is easy to remove and clean. Located Front right passengers side of automatic tranny, 96 to 2002 Civics and Accords and CRV. Whack it on its face a few times and blow it out with a compressor. Use a pencil and a rag to keep from losing all your fluid when you take it off. Check the sound of the click with a 12 volt battery. Sometimes the solenoids get stuck if the fluid gets varnished or if it sits too long. The upper solenoid pair is not so touchy. Bottom solenoid will sometimes prevent starting out in first and will go straight to 2nd or 3rd from start. Also some creep in neutral when this solenoid is sticky. It doesn't move much when operational. A paper clip will move a solenoid plunger 1/8th inch.

My suv won't shift gears what can i do?

if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.

Pickup starts great, goes into all gears but won't move. It's like it is still in nutural.

Assuming the pickup is an automatic, check the transmission fluid. The #1 cause for transmission slippage is lack of Automatic Transmission Fluid.

If the pickup is a standard shift, the pin that connects the shift to the transmission has likely broken. You would still be able to shift from the inside but the gears won't engage. A bad clutch is also a possibility but you would have noticed a burning smell prior to the clutch giving out.

Toyota Vista SV50 model / year 1999: I have used Dextron type 2 automatic fluid in the auto transmission. Could this be the problem for auto gears sticking in same gear too long when car is started in...

Hi, since you use a dextron type 2 automatic fluid then it is not cause of the sticking gear. Rather it should be as a result of a clogged transmission filter. A clogged transmission filtercan cause problems with changing gears because it will not allow the fluid to pass through the valve body or valve solenoids at the proper pressure. Without pressure, the plates won't move properly and you won't be able to easily change gears. This can be symptomatic either by itself or along with burnt or worn out transmission fluid, and both should generally be replaced at the same time, rather than just replacing one or the other.

Gear shifter is broken

When you say it is broken do you mean it won't move into certain gears?

In past couple days our '04 Echo shifting lever won't go into Park or 2 or Lo gear. And we couldn't take the key out of the ignition. My husband took to center console cover off and when he loosened the bolt under the lever we were able to get it into park and get the key out. But still cannot get into the lower gears. Will probably be taking it to a transmission shop before making major decision.

If your's is an automatic trans, and it is locked in park, there is a small opening on the right/front side of the shifter, pop the top and press the white button, it releases the lever.

Good Luck!

96 pontiac grand prix gear shift moves but wont go into gear unless you move the car by hand then it clicks and will shift

Are you saying the automatic transmission will not shift into gear or the shifter won't move into the correct position?

It sounds like you have transmission problems but it could be that your linkage is loose or defective. Not enough information to give you a good starting place.
