I have a 2004 Explorer XLT and whenever you step on the gas to excelerate, you hear a "whooshing" sound that is pretty loud. Any idea on what it could be?

The check engine light will represent fault codes that the computer is sensing. Have a mechanic, or go to your local auto parts superstore and have them scan for the fault codes. This will at least give you an idea about some of your problems.
1st Any recent work done on vehicle? Air filter attached properly, filter element in correctly, hose clamps on air induction tight? 2nd Stand behind vehicle while it is running. Have someone slowly step on the gas pedal. Does the 'whooshing' sound seem to come from the exhaust pipe(s) when giving it gas? If yes, the catalytic converter pasrt of the exhaust system) may have partially collapsed inside (due to rust), and is partially blocking the exit of the exhaust gases. To fix this, you will need to replace the converter. If this is the case, check online for a new aftermarket unit, as they can be very expensive.
