with the details that you have provided, it sounds like it may be either a ground, or ignition relay, but I've also encountered the same problem being the starter wire to the starter. The reason I think that is because of your dash lights coming back on .If you have use of a voltmeter you can test and see how much power is actually going to the starter An ignition relay could do the same, but usually won't interrupt the engine after it's running.
No way to tell what happened with the high idle if you can't make it happen on demand. The oil and engine lights would come on if the engine died while the key was still on so that was a normal event. You might stop somewhere and have the computer scanned for trouble codes just in case the computer recorded anything. The difference in octane should not be a big problem if you don't switch back and forth, after about 50 miles of driving the computer will adjust for the octane of the fuel.
For me it was the inertia switch had some dirt in it pulled the connector and cleaned it out and suddenly it started working after i checked and replaced everything else
The voltage regulator in your altenator may be going out. If you have a battery gauge in your dash, see if the voltage is getting higher than 14V when the problem occurs.
Your transmission is an electronic shift, and if the voltage gets too high, your car tries to start off in a higher gear than what it is supposed to and will run very badly.
I had the same problem. you have to either keep replacing the filter until the line has cleaned out or blow the filter out with an air hose. Tedious but cheap.
