First check fluid level in the pump. Then check for leaks under the stearing area. If you have a bad leak, the steering pump will never keep up. So it will be more than just the pump. Since you want to DIY, I recommend a repair manual from your favorite Auto parts store, or try filepeep.com if they have it, or
manualslib.com You will want it next time anyway.

2000 Mercury Cougar, Automatic, 2.5L, V6. Car started making a whining noise when turning the wheel so I start putting in Power Steering Fluid within a couple days it does the same thing. Now car is making...

You likely have a bad power steering pump or a hose that is leaking. Do not put any fluid other than power steering fluid in the power steering reservoir. if you do you will wreck the hoses and pump. Better not drive it till you get it repaired or you may ruin something else or have an accident.

Did you check the fuelid level today? A loud whine indicates low fluid or a defective pump in most cases.

Hard steering on cold start

This could be a bad steering rack or power steering pump, the correct way to find out which one is the problem a gauge would need to be hooked to power steering pump and when cold watch the pressure readings and if pressure is low then you replace the pump but if pressure if good then rack has internal leak, compare readings when cold and when it operates good.

Lost power steering and brakes on 96 Astro

Hello altgraph1: My name is Roger and I can help. The power steering and the brakes are directly connected. If the power steering pump fails you will also loose the brake assist. This vehicle does not have a vacuum booster you have a hydro-boost brake system. This unit uses the power steering pressure to assist the stopping of the vehicle. You will need special tools to determine if the power steering pump failed or if the hydro-boost system failed. Most likely the power steering pump failed. How ever to be sure it should be tested first. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

My 2003 Ford Windstar whines when turning the steering wheel.

The power steering pump has gone bad. Consider replacing it because if serviced it will still show this sign in a little while.

Good luck.

Lost power steering on 2001 Monte Carlo SS

I don't know how much this will help but some common problems with loosing power steering is that your power steering pump is gone.your pump is about a foot below the alternator on the side of the firewall - hard to get to it under the hood without removing some items, I got some prices for you and a new pump couls cost anyware from $18 to $70. also the belt could have loosened up just enough that your power steering wont work. hope this helped.
