Car starts then cuts out

MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS CHARGED OR NEW. TAKE OFF THE STEERING COLUMN COVERS. PUT THE KEY IN, NO EXTRA KEYS HANGING FROM IT. START THE CAR. UNPLUG THE CONNECTOR WITH THE YELLOW, BLACK, AND WHITE WIRES CONNECTING TO THE PASSLOCK/LOCK CYLINDER, AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO RUN.TAPE THE CONNECTORS. REPLACE COVER. YOUR THEFT LIGHT WILL STAY ON/FLICKER. YOU HAVE DISABLED THE SYSTEM. NOW THE CAR WON'T CUT OFF WHILE TRYING TO START IT. SUMMARY: YOUR PASSLOCK WAS FAILING. OTHERWISE IF YOUR IGNITION SWITCH WAS FAILING, IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T TRY TO START. FOUND THIS ON A SITE FOR A CAVALIER...... AND SUNFIRES DIAGRAMS AND THEFT FEATURES ARE MOSTLY THE SAME. NO PELLET IN KEY. NO RESISTORS. NO CUTTING WIRES. NO 10 MIN RELEARN. HOPE THIS HELP.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. we pulled the key out of ignition without the car in park. the cover "Button" on shifter had gotten stuck under it. now the Steering wheel is locked, the Key will...

The key is most likely OK. So is the shifter. I would bet a $100.00 (that I can't cover) that the shifter is in a console "on the center of the floor". If so, the "electric/mechanical switch that you key cylinder actuates when it turns is on the top of the steering column, above the brake pedal. You will have to drop the column down with the 2 1/2 nuts, holding the column up to the dash, after the plastic cowls are removed. It will have a cable, that goes from the "electrical" switch, to the console. to activate/deactivate, the button on the shifter that depresses. Once it breaks, usually cloumn will lock "open" or "locked" .......no in between.

Can get the key to turn all the way off

First make sure the shifter is in park. Directly beneath ignition key cylinder is a hole in steering column. There may be a plastic cap covering it. Pry out cap if so. Take small screwdriver or paperclip & push up on center of spring loaded switch while turning back on key.

I had to stall the 5 spd this morning as she would not shut off. Disconnested the battery. Something to do with the steering lock maybe?? Can't get the key out, won't turn to the off position. Hope someone...

Disconnect the lock from the switch itself (on top of column under dash) If key switch moves freely, replace switch. It helps to drop column down when working there.

2000 Pontiac Sunfire wont start

Its likely that you have either a bad ignition switch or a bad neutral safety switch (if stickshift, clutch switch) Try starting in neutral...if it starts, change neutral switch (jump across clutch switch, check starting in neutral with your foot on the brake) Ignition switch is on top of steering column under dash.
