If all three brake lamps stay lit, including the center, it's probably the brake lamp relay which is located in left rear side of vehicle in the fuse block compartment (that hidden one covered with carpet). Volvo usually uses ID "RMI5" - that's as close as I can get you. If possible, try testing first by using an existing "good" relay back there. Any should work if the spades match up. Check around for moisture - should be bone dry, but I've heard of techs drilling holes up from the bottom of the vehicle into that compartment to run accessory wiring and not sealing the holes they've created.

There's a switch on the brake pedal arm that turns the light on when you press the brake pedal.
The switch needs to be adjusted or replaced.
Hope this helps.

This is most likely a short in the instrument panel's(IP) logic chip. As long as you can start the car everyday, you can live with it or have the IP diagnosed and replace it. If you ever plan to leave it for a week or two. Disable the radio and nav systems if you have to, then remove the negative side of the battery. This light will drain the battery over time.

After shutting off the engine and removing the keys the brake lights remain on, and will sometime remain lit when the vehicle is running but the brakes are not applied

Sounds like your brake light switch is sticking-its located under the dash and if you dont do any of your own mechanical work its a good idea to take it somewhere you trust. the part isnt a real expensive one but the labor is going to be the major part of the cost. Most shops charge at least a 1/2 hr of labor @ $80 per hr.

Changed brake light switch but brake lights remain on in 1998 ford escort

Hi Demetris, I'm glad to help!

Sometimes but not always, the piece on the brake pedal that touches the brake light switch to turn off the light will get bent away from the switch so its not touching it. Check to see if it is touching the switch, pull the pedal toward you and see if the lights go out. If they do go out then 2 things may have happened. (1) The metal bracket is bent and not touching, which you can bend back into place. (2) Some vehicles have what you call a return spring that connects to the dash and runs to the pedal to pull it back toward you to turn off the lights. If you see a spring dangling under the dash, then you'll need to replace that spring. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Demetris.

My brake lights will not turn off when the motor is off what is wrong?

Well, the brake light circuit is always energized. If you have the vehicle off and press on the brakes, the lights should illuminate.

If the brake lights remain on without the pedal being pressed, something is wrong with the switch, located under the dash, along the pedal arm. This switch may need adjustment or replacement.

BRAKE LIGHT REMAIN ON

The installations of alarms I have seen over the years were with few exception very very poorly done, and always the cause of the electrical issues like yours and 100's of other problems, the alarm installer always denied there alarm was at fault, but when I restored the factory wiring the problems went away, HUM!, I will bet if you restore the wiring that everything will work again as designed.
