I have an 91 bronco with an automatic transmission that wont shift on its own. It will shift fine if you run it through the gears automatically, but doesn't shift when its in drive.

Its salvaged so i don't know if its the original transmission. I tried to change the vacuum modulator but it doesn't seem to have one.

I have an 91 bronco with an automatic transmission - 91-bronco-automatic-transmission-wont-h3u3bvaxgt5rbqkhjnnyjnme-5-0.jpg
this is the modulator this one is pre-adjusted for A4ld

this is the other one that is adjustable for the c-6 trans

E40D trans they are all different and maybe you'll find it now there is 4.9 motor 5.0 5.8 and all can come with A4ld /E40D / or C6 transmission look for broken or disconnected vacuum lines or if the engine is running rough you must correct the running condition because you are loosing vacuum inches and the trans needs vacuum at a certain level to shift if the engine stutters your loosing the vacuum and it will never shift that's what this sounds like to me or that modulator needs adjustment or to be replaced later man! it's party time!

what I really want to know is what transmission is in the truck otherwise the info could be somewhat worthless and I'm wasting both our times but I'm trying to help you because I know that in todays economy everybodies trying to keep there vehicle on the road as cheap as possible and also to learn more about mechanics so here's a question for you when the truck is cold does it shift normal---yes/no if yes then there is a leaking seal in the valve body or o-ring trans fluid is thicker when cold and expands and gets thinner when hot /// are you sure the right fluid is in it and at the proper level ///the right dipstick --which tranny? ---if no did you try the kickdown cable adjustment--yes/no--also did you try to adjust the intermediate band at all ---yes/no was the transmission serviced by you at all since you owned it ---yes/no did you seperate the transfer case and check the governer inside the tail agood cleaning with solvent and a new spring //or a new governer altogether might help ///is the fluid bright red/rose pink or is it brown if it's brown it's burnt and should be changed when you drop the pan if you find dark grey shavings stuck to the pan magnet there's already some band wear but if it's not a real lot then there is still hope if you find any parts//solid metal chips or pieces not shavings there's a real problem here's some pic's of the governor on a A4LD to get to it you need to seperate the transfer case and go into the tail of the trans it can be done without taking the tail off but if you got big hands taking off the tail will help a great deal there's only 8 bolts 6 on the tail case and 2 on the governor only use solvent to clean this you might have to let it soak if you use a brush make sure it's not metal you'll scratch and remove surface metal from the governor & it will make a fantastic paper weight please give other info on what trans you have and try all other things first before you get into removing the tail

Lincoln LS2000, transmission hesitates to shift from park into any gear. No problems with shifting through gears in regular driving. Is this a major repair? Only 113,000 mi.

Inspection is required.

1988 Ford Bronco Transmission Issues

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.
