Which is causing the front wheel discs to heat up and petrol economy is shortened
There are 4 possible causes. The first is that the slide pins for the calipers are rusty [due to water ingress from failed boots or seals] as mentioned by Chris. Second is that the rubber flex hose has collapsed internally. This causes pressure to be retained in the affected brake caliper, causing that brake to drag. Typically, the first two causes only affect a single wheel. When both front wheels are affected, the cause will be either a sticking or mis-adjusted brake master cylinder [#3] or a failed ABS [anti-lock brake system] control unit, if the vehicle has anti-lock brakes.
It is possible that the slave pistons that apply pressure to the disc pads to engage the brake disc are dirty corroded and or seized.
A car mechanic will the the wheel off remove the disc breaks blast it out with air then apply isopropyl alcohol or some other non-lubricant cleaner to release them. If this doesn't work then they will need replacing.
