There's a humming noise, relative to road speed. Starts at 35-40 mph. I wondered if this is a familiar problem to old Matizs and hoped you might help me locate it.

There are may things it could be. But the most common ones are:
- Broken belt in your tire.
- Bad wheel bearing
- loose brakes
- bad tie rods or ball joints

Humming sound when cold and at higher speeds

I would suspect a loose baffle in the exhaust system. Once I put an overhead rack on my F250 and when going down the road at a certain speed the air rushing between the overhead bar and the truck cab caused low hum.
When the noise starts ,and it is safe, put the transmission in N and see if it goes away. I have also shut my engine off while driving to see if a noise goes away. Usually it is a vibration problem.

Why is there a humming noise, relative to road speed, starting at 35-40 mph

Check your cars Wheel bearing. Jack up the wheels and hold tire in 6 & 12 o'clock positions(up and down) and shake the tire by pulling towards you with one hand and pushing away with other hand, if you find play then you need wheel bearing on that axle side.

2000 Stratus, 2.4 automatic. A loud humming noise

hi this sounds like you have a wheel bearing that has gone u/s the way to find out which one is to individually jack each wheel up and spin the wheel first you might hear a grinding noise, if not you can pull the bottom of the wheel and push the top in a rocking motion top to bottom, left to right if you get a large amount of movement then this will also point out which wheel it is....hope that helps

2004 Chrysler Crossfire 25,000 mls auto, road hum noise

MOST of the hums after a while come from the diff as the back axle does the driving and almost all its life runs the same way except when going in reverse ,is the rear diff meshing and worn on both the crownwheel and the pinion and the humming gets slightly louder the faster you go and almost goes when almost stopped and this can also be the slight vibration you get so get the diff oil drained and refilled and check if there is any metal in the oil when drained if so thats your problem But it will last for years like that..Let me know how you get on RON

2004 Pontaic Bonneville humming noise wheel bearing?

I had a similar problem, when turning to the right or on a right curve, the noise would go away. After some research I found it was the left wheel bearing assembly. I replaced it and the problem is gone. Therefore, check the wheel bearing assembly. You may have to replace it.
