The timing belt is very tricky to replace and requires a special tool to align the pulleys. It sounds like you may be off a tooth or two on the pulleys which will affect the cam position.

Make sure that you have the transmission software updated. Volvo has had many upgrades on their transmission's control software to address these exact symptoms.

SOURCE: Replace timing belt on Volvo S60

There is no room for error...... Zero clearance. If off one tooth it can and will bend valves. if you are one that just feels the need to get alittle dirty or just can't pay for the service, then get out your Haynes out and turn to .....Tune up, and look at replacing timming belt. Get a cam gear tool that locks them into place so as that they will not move when u have them lined up. make sure they are lined up with marks as said in book. then make sure crank as well as all marks are lined up acordingly. make sure belt marks are lined up with everything. i would reccomend using a volvo belt though cause it will have all the marks on it.However other company's make good quality belts also at a fraction of the price. So it is really up to you.
Good thing when doing timming belt is to also change out your timming belt tensioner. YES do this it will save you a engine in the long run. it is a moving part that will go bad, it will freeze up and snap timming belt. rip out teeth in thebelt and bend valves. So as a gen rule...When you change timming belt, Change belt tensioner at same time since you cant just change tensioner without changing or getting timming belt off. Remember to use your HAYNES. It is your friend and will save you money in the long run. Good luck... Hope this helps you.

SOURCE: need Volvo 04 s60 timing belt diagram and install

My apologies for the delayed response. I am going back and answering questions that were never answered.
Click on the following Link. It has all the Diagrams for the Timing Belt you will need.
Before Clicking, let me know if this helped.
Again my sincerest apologies...

As far as the install info, due to the sheer volume and number of steps that would have to be included, you may want to purchase a Haynes Manual or Chilton Manual at an auto parts store for around $20 to $25. The above site also has On-Line Repair Manual you can purchase.

When should you change cam belt on volvo s60

Well, most belt companies and aftermarket folks recommend 60,000 to 80,000 miles on a timing belt. You have an interference engine which means if the belt breaks while the engine is running it could damage the valves and pistons. So I would recommend doing it soon.

2002 volvo s60 cylinder 3 misfire detected

I have a bad feeling. I own a Volvo SW XC70 and I had to change the timing belt because I didn't want to have to buy a new engine. I changed it at around 150K miles. The belt is a composite and is not a chain (metal), so it can stretch, thus giving you "bad" timing and making it impossible to tune. If you have not checked or changed the belt, try it. It really won't cost that much (depending on where you take it. I went to Volvo. Good luck.

I have a Volvo S60 T5 2002. I have not done the maintenance after the 100,000 miles. Can you tell me which prts I need to change?

There are a few things that need to be done, first the timing belt and waterpump if this engine has one most do, so for this you would need a waterpump timing belt kit with pulleys, next is a complete tune up, spark plugs ,wire if eng uses if not then coil boots, air and fuel filters cabin filter, pcv valve, a fuel system cleaning which is done by machine at a shop called a motor vac service. then check fan belt , flush cooling system, coolant needed.and then the rest of the service is a lot of checking like brake, suspension , exhaust etc, hope this helps.

I have 140K on by 2002 S60 what service should I complete. Did big service at 75K, timing belt never changed. What do you recommend?

You should have changed the Timing Belt at 60K niles, by not changing the Timing Belt you are taking a serious gamble on the Belt breaking on you at anytime, leaving you stranded and costing you thousands of dollars in engine repairs. If your car runs fine, No Check Engine Lights, I would just do your regular engine oil changes, flush Radiator, Change Transmission Fluid and Filter, but change the Timing Belt ASAP.

What are the timing marks for a 2002 volvo s60

if your only changing your belt you should be ok if you make your own. but if you already removed the belt and forgot to mark it you will need to use timing tools that go into the back of the camshaft behind two little rubber caps.

I need to change my timing belt on my 2002 S60 Volvo. Where can I get a diagram or manual on how to do this?

this is very tricky on a volvo because of the cvvt unit if you have never attempted this in a volvo take it to the dealer it may be expxnsive but its cheaper than buying an engine there is a special sequence for the cvvt unit and there is a possibility of 2 styles and they arent set up the same way actually they are exact opposites from each other
