It depends on what engine you have .
Its not like the old days ware you could adjust the timeing.
Its all computer controled .
Bolth answers were correct before mine depending on what you have you need to be more speific with information to hope to get a better answer thanks

Depending on the year,make and model of the vehicle, the distributor can be moved slightly to achieve proper ignition timing. After the timing has been set be sure to clamp the distributor down to maintain proper setting. On most newer distributor type engines, the distributor is not used to adjust the timing and will not turn, most common in this set up are GM's VORTEC engines. The distributor is used to distribute spark and drive the oil pump, the computer controls the timing.

I have a 2001 dodge ram 5.9 2500, engine was running sluggish, changed plugs wires, distributor cap, rotor cap, and crankshaft sensor, now vehicle won't start at all, I'm sure I have the wiring right


Recheck the plug wires. If they are right, put cylinder one on top dead center. pull the distributor cap. It should be where it is supposed to be or 180 degrees off(at number 6). If not there, someone has just moved the wires to make it run. Reset the distributor.

Xterra jerked while in motion intermittently. I pulled out of the freeway, Xterra won't start afterwards.


It's probably the distributor. Check the shaft inside and see if it moves. It's only supposed to turn, now inside the distributor you'll see a dial, that's your throttle positioner sensor and it's the reason for the symptoms you've mentioned. Just replace the distributor and it should fix it. 2000-2004 Xterras have trouble with with the distributors.

78 chevy 350 motor has no spark or power to the distributor


there has to be a wire from the coil to the distributor to the points inside the distributor
if it has points , check that they are not shorted out and that the moving point is insulated from the distributor plate
check for a condenser attached to the moving point and fixed to the distributor body
if it has an electronic system , it could be a problem igniter unit in the distributor

To Remove
  • Disconnect the distributor wiring connector and the vacuum advance hose, if the vehicle is so equipped.
  • Remove the distributor cap and note the position of the rotor. Mark the position on the distributor housing.
  • On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the spark plug wires from the cap prior to cap removal.
  • Note the position of the vacuum advance, then remove the distributor holddown bolt and clamp.
  • Pull the distributor from the engine. Most distributors will need to be twisted as they are pulled out of their bore.
  • Once the distributor is removed, install a shop towel in the distributor opening to keep foreign material out of the engine block.
  • The entire assembly should be cleaned thoroughly. Make sure all solvent residue is completely removed.
Installing and Timing a Distributor
The following procedure may be followed to install the distributor and time it to the engine, if all reference marks were made during the removal of the distributor:
  • Lubricate the O-ring on the distributor shaft.
  • Position the rotor so that it is aligned with the mark made on the distributor housing prior to removal.
  • Align the distributor housing with the mark made on the engine block during removal.
  • Lower the distributor into the engine block, making sure the distributor drive is fully seated.
  • Distributors equipped with a helical drive gear will rotate at the distributor is being installed, causing the distributor to move away from the reference marks.
  • Pay attention to how much the rotor moves.
  • Remove the distributor and move the rotor backward the same amount. This should allow the shaft to rotate while the distributor is being installed and still be aligned with the reference marks.
  • Make sure the distributor housing is fully seated against the engine block. Sometimes it may be necessary to wiggle or rock the distributor to seat it fully into the drive gear.
  • Distributors with drive lugs must be mated with the drive grooves in the camshaft. Both are offset to eliminate the possibility of installing a distributor 180 degrees out of time.

  • Rotate the distributor a small amount so the timer core teeth and pick-up teeth are aligned.
  • Install the distributor holddown clamp and bolt, leaving the bolt slightly loose.
  • Install the spark plug wires in the direction of distributor shaft rotation and in the cylinder firing order.
  • Connect the distributor wiring connectors. The vacuum advance hose is usually left disconnected until the timing is set with the engine running.
If the engine has been cranked while the distributor is removed, or no marks were made during removal, use this procedure to reinstall the distributor:
To be sure that the number one cylinder is on its compression stroke, observe the rocker arms to see that they are both moving. Then, rotate the crankshaft one revolution until the rocker arms for the companion to cylinder number one are both moving at TDC (top dead center). Align the timing mark and install the distributor with its rotor pointing to the number one spark plug cable in the distributor cap.

  • Remove the spark plug from cylinder #1. Install a test plug in the end of the spark plug wire and position the test plug away from you and cylinder #1.

  • Place your thumb over the bore for the spark plug and crank the engine until compression is felt.

  • Lightly crank the engine while observing the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. Once the timing marks are aligned, stop cranking.

  • Identify the position for the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap.

  • Determine which way the distributor shaft will rotate when it is lowered onto the camshaft gear. Then position the rotor so that it will be under the #1 terminal on the distributor cap after the distributor gear is meshed with the camshaft gear.

  • After the distributor is installed in the engine, turn the distributor housing slightly so the pickup coil is aligned with the reluctor.

  • Install the distributor holddown clamp and bolt. Hand tighten the bolt.

  • Connect the pickup leads to the wiring harness.

  • Install the spark plug wires onto the distributor cap according to the engine's firing order. Check to make sure everything that was disconnected before the distributor was removed, is now connected. Connect a timing light and prepare the engine for an ignition timing check and adjustment.

The cap does not rotate. If you want to move the distributor, loosen the hold-down bolt, and turn the whole distributor housing.

How do I change the distributor

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the distributor wire(s) at its harness. Loosen the screws holding the cap onto the housing 88272p05.jpg

  3. On the 4A-F engines, disconnect the vacuum advance hoses. NOTE: On some models the distributor wires are part of the cap and can not be separated.
  4. Remove the distributor cap. Label and disconnect the wires from the cap. On some engines it will be necessary to use a flat bladed tool to lift up the lock claw and disconnect the holder from the cap.   5. Carefully note the position of the distributor rotor relative to the distributor housing (also note position of distributor to the engine assembly); a mark made on the casing/housing will be necessary for reassembly. Use a marker or tape so the mark doesn't rub off during handling of the case/housing. Mark the position of the rotor relative to the distributor housing 88272p07.jpg

How do you set the timing on a 1998 GMC Sierra?


The timing is not adjustable and it is computer controlled, but the distributor must still be clocked in properly and static timed, and here is how it is done.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing, the engine should now be static timed.

Element on distributor rotor keeps breaking off disabling the vehicle. How do you fix the problem?


It sounds as if the distributor shaft is moving, causing the rotor contact to collide with the distributor cap. With the cap off have someone turn the engine over and watch the rotor for a wobble. If there is a wobble either the bushings/bearings in the distributor housing are worn out or the shaft is bent or worn.

How to set timing on 1998 gmc sierra


The v-8's timing is supposed to be 0 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees and is only adjustable if you have a scanner. A timing light does not work on them.
These engines can be "timed" in the way you are used too.
The distibutor housing holds the cam sensor, The PCM calculates the timing by measuring the crank signal and the cam signal.

What you are seting by turning the distibutor housing is the correlation between the 2 sensors. On the V-6 model, the housing holddown bracket is fixed to the housing so if you return the rotor to the proper position when reinstalling the housing, the engine should be at the correct cam sensor position setting.they did not fix the holddown bracket to the V-8 models, it would have saved a lot of headaches.
To set the correlation between the 2, you will need a scan tool that can read camshaft position offset. With the engine RPM over 1200 adjust the offset too 0 degrees.
TEST PROCEDURE
The ignition timing cannot be adjusted. The distributor may need adjusting to prevent crossfire. To insure proper alignment of the distributor, perform the following:

With the ignition OFF, install a scan tool to the DLC.
Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. IMPORTANT: Cam ****** Offset reading will not be accurate below 1000 RPM.
Increase engine speed to 1000 RPM.
Monitor the Cam ****** Offset.
If the Cam ****** indicates a value of 0°+/-2°, the distributor is properly adjusted.
If the Cam ****** does not indicate 0°+/-2°, the distributor must be adjusted.

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE
With the engine OFF, slightly loosen the distributor hold down bolt. IMPORTANT: Cam ****** Offset reading will not be accurate below 1000 RPM.
Start the engine and raise engine speed to 1000 RPM.
Using a scan tool monitor Cam ****** Offset.
Rotate the distributor as follows:
4.1. To compensate for a negative reading, rotate the distributor in the counterclockwise direction.
4.2. To compensate for a positive reading, rotate the distributor in the clockwise direction.

Repeat step 4 until 0°+/-2°, is obtained.
Turn the ignition OFF.
Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 3 Nm (25 lb. ft.).
Start the engine, raise engine speed to 1000 RPM and recheck Camshaft ****** Offset.
