Question about 1998 Jaguar XK8

1 Answer

What causes my 1998 Jaguar XK8 not to start when initially cranked and the Fail Safe message is displayed?

Vehical shut-down while driving on freeway. Managed to pull over to the shoulder safely. Tried to start with no success. The Fail Safe message was displayed. Do not know where to start trouble shooting. Need help.

There is no timing adjustment. Ignition timing is controlled by the computer through camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. If the timing chain or chain tensioners are worn excessively, that would create a mis-timed engine, but it isn't adjustable. Jaguar motors do have a problem with their automatic timing chain tensioners, and it's a possibility that the engine valve train is not in sync with the crankshaft.

Is the check engine light displayed? If it is, that's where you start, by retrieving the fault code(s). If not, then you could have a security system fault, fuel system breakdown, etc. All codes, regardless of the systems affected, will cause the vehicle computer to immediately default to a failsafe mode, till the problem has been fixed, and this drastically affects driveability, causing no-start issues, idle problems, etc.

Security is set. Could be one problem. Fuel system can do this, but rarely. Takes a scanner to see where to look first.

Adding coolant to a 1998 Jaguar XK8

if the coolant light is on or comes on when driving you MUST let the car cool down at lest 1 hour before doing anything, after this cool down time lift the hood [u.s.a.] or bonnet [uk] looking from the front of the car on the right hand side towards the back of the engine compartment is the coolant header tank, about 5inch square black in color [u.s.a.] colour [uk] with a large screw top and some rubber pipes coming from it,this should be topped up with coolant right to the neck of the screw cap when you remove the cap to top up the coolant unscrew it slowly as it may be under pressure you don't want hot 212F[u.s.a.] 100C [uk] coolant in your face do you.good luck.
